All freshman decisions will be completed by March 31. Transfer decisions will be finalized by May 1, and new decisions will be posted each weekday."
Can you guys do me a solid and rate my chances of getting into UCSB!?
Transferring from a CCC
Major: Communication
GPA:3.69 (time of submission) 3.73 (after spring)
TAG: no (TAG to UCI)
IGETC: Done Fall 2015
PREREQS: Missing three. Only have Statistics done
EC: Nike Employee, PTK (Honor Society), Senator for student govt, Hispanic/Latino club, member of youth city council
Essay: 8.9/10 … talked about my motivation and how my troubling surroundings propelled me to move forward.
APPLIED: UCI UCLA UCSB CSUF SDSU
ACCEPTED: CSUF
Denied: SDSU
The thing that worries me the most is the three missing prerequisites out of 4. My community college did not offer these classes and I talked about it in application. Still I fret about being rejected because of it. On assist.org it states completion of prerequisites is not required for admission. What do you guys think? Thank you and good luck to all!
@Panorama14 If the pre-reqs were only recommended and not required it won’t automatically disqualify you for admission, esp seeing as they weren’t articulated at your CC. Honestly, there’s no real telling from our POV how they’ll take those missing pre-reqs.
But consider the fact that otherwise you’re a fairly attractive candidate, slightly above the average admitted GPA, honor society and plenty of EC’s, IGETC completed, good essay. I do know that comm is pretty competitive however. Have you checked if your TAG for UCI was accepted? Because one of the terms is that you complete all major coursework and pre-reqs, though I’m not sure in your case since they’re not articulated at your CC if it’ll affect you negatively. You should check.
None of us can tell you how they’ll judge that part of your app, but the rest of it looks pretty respectable, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you got into UCI or UCSB. The only one I’d say is iffy is UCLA only because of how competitive Communication Studies is there. They had a 13% admit rate for it last year, only 125/962 got in. And out of those, the bottom 25th percentile had a GPA of 3.9, it’s crazy competitive. But I would remain hopeful!
@ananguiano with UCI I actually applied for a different major (literary journalism) im only missing one pre-req (5/6) and they do not give out early admission decision for TAG applicant. Same goes for UCLA, I applied as an American Literature and Culture major (not comm) with the intent to switch to English. My career goal is to become a journalist with an emphasis in sports. As of right now my number one choice is UCSB because I feel it would suit my career choice better. Its tough. I appreciate your input by the way!
@Panorama14 Good move on applying to UCLA as American Lit and Culture - I hear it’s easy to switch to English, given the prerequisites are the same (or similar?)
@goldencub yeah man, they are exactly the same and I also heard its fairly easy to switch to English. My decision then becomes whether I decided to attend UCSB and major in Comm or go to UCLA and major in English, assuming I get into both.
@Panorama14 I’ve heard wonderful, wonderful things about UCLA’s English department. I’m a philosophy major, but I have a massive love for literature - reading philosophy is far less enjoyable than reading a (good) novel.
Cross-posting from other threads. I hope that’s okay. :-*
Major: Psychology
Alternate Choice: Psychological and Brain Sciences (Which is the most mysterious major ever. It isn’t listed on Assist or their website, but it was an option to select on the application. I think it’s a new major. Hopefully they accept me into that one if I’m rejected from regular psychology!)
UC GPA: 3.32
Major GPA: 3.0 (I got a C in stats last semester, which was disappointing and sank my GPA, and the other major requirements are currently in progress, so I can’t count them yet.)
Prerequisites: Done Except for Calculus (which can be done in the summer if I’m accepted)
TAG: No, I tagged UCSC instead.
ECs: My community college’s honors program, president of two clubs, member of another, employed as a College Relations Ambassador, and was once an intern for 7 Cups (though I don’t know how highly they’re going to value that due to the fact that it’s an online internship instead of an in-person one).
I’m honestly afraid that I’m going to get denied. I have this really sketchy academic history that goes from super awful to great after taking a two-year break from school, but then my grades dipped super low last semester because I took too many classes at once (I got a 2.95 GPA after having straight As for three semesters). I guess I’ll find out at 3 PM next Tuesday :\
Let’s just remember next Tuesday is when decisions start going out. Many of us will not hear back on that day. We must temper our expectations or else risk our sanity >-)
I know i’m late to the thread but here are my stats, what are my chances?
College GPA: 3.34
Major: Sociology.
IGETC: Completed by the end of this semester
EC: board member of a couple of clubs, internships, some sports, volunteering.
@Panorama14 I think you have a solid shot at UCSB, but of course I can’t say for sure. Classes not being offered at your CCC shouldn’t hurt you negatively; they really just want to see demonstrated interest in the major. It’s important to note that, however, if you ARE admitted that your major would be PRE-COMM. I know this because I am missing one class as well, but said I will take it over the summer at my CC. Then, once you take those prereqs at UCSB, you’ll be able to apply to the major.
(I would recommend taking any of your comm prereqs this summer either at SBCC, it’ll be cheaper and you’ll get it done quicker)
@Cheolf good point. I have a countdown going and I need to remind myself that I most likely will not be in the first batch released on the 22nd. It is so difficult to be patient in a time like this though haha. :-SS
@falltransfer1 I certainly hope that’s the case! Thanks for the reassurance. My goal was only to throw the possibility out there in case someone doesn’t hear back immediately.
Major: Statistical Science/Actuarial Science
GPA: 3.36
TAG: Yes(UCSB)
IGETC: Complete
Pre reqs: Complete after Spring but will be missing 3 articulated pre-reqs(math 3b, 4a, and 4b). In addition, there were two other pre-reqs that weren’t articulated at my CC.
EC’s: Internship at a hospital (initially a kinesiology major)
Essay: Pretty Solid
Applied: UCI, UCSB, UCSD, and UCLA
Rolling decisions start coming in next week. I’m really worried because I’ll be missing 3 articulated pre-reqs plus 2 courses non-articulated at my CC. One of the non-articulated courses being recommended. What do you guys think about my chances of getting accepted/rejected into UCSB even with TAG? I’ll greatly appreciate any feedback and input from you guys. Good luck to everyone else!
@BlinkFeed I’m pretty sure TAG at UCSB is only valid if you complete all major pre-reqs, that’s one of the conditions of it, and if your TAG is voided you’ll comply be considered for admissions under regular consideration.
I’m curious, which 2 courses were non-articulated? Are they 6A and another class? Because otherwise I don’t see how you could’ve taken Calc 3 while missing Calc 2. I imagine the other non-articulated course would be math 8(?) If so, that’s not too great, but if it’s the CS courses you’re missing it’d be better. Though how you would’ve taken Calc 3 without Calc 2 again, makes this seem unlikely.
It depends a lot to on which major is actually your preferred or secondary of the ones you put. You’d have a much better chance at Statistical Sciance than Actuarial in this case, seeing as Actuarial has more pre-reqs and is generally a bit more competitive.
Your GPA, essay, and IGETC give you a pretty solid chance I think, better than mine I have a friend who’s a maths major and trying to transfer without 4A-B so you’re not the only one missing those. However, missing those classes definitely doesn’t help your application and actually missing math 3B seems pretty major, I mean I’m pretty sure all these schools expect you to have taken Calc 2 before transferring.
UCLA seems like a bit of a reach given that reason. I can’t speak much to UCI or UCSD when it comes to pre-reqs, and while UCSB is known to be a little bit more lenient with them, letting you in without Math 3B would make you an exceptional case I imagine. This isn’t to discourage you by any means, just an opinion. I know when UCR accepted me, it was provisional on me completing their equivalent of Math 6A-B and 4B. But I’m a pure maths major and YMMV.
I guess your application could also depend a bit on what your actual grades were in your math classes were as well. Hopefully it works out well, like I said you have a solid GPA, etc. going for you for UCSB. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
