ucsb freshman summer start program?

hi everyone! i’m really torn on whether or not to do the freshman summer start program, and i was wondering if there is anyone here who has done it or who has a passionate opinion about whether i should do it or not?

i’m also curious if the dorms i live in during the program will be the dorms that i stay in all year, or if there is a second moving day into the dorms i’d be staying in all year closer to the start of fall quarter.

thank you guys!!

My tour guide that attended the Summer Start program said he enjoyed becoming more acclimated socially to UCSB and made some new friends before starting the fall semester.

didnt do the summer start but your dorm will remain your dorm all year! It’s usually San Nic so I’d look into that. I’d recommend doing it, it seems like a good way to find a group of friends before everyone comes and kinda get used to the campus while theres only a little bit of people taking summer courses. Take like 2-3 easy GEs and ur set.

@ucplsbb It costs like 6k …

Our son did it and I highly recommend it. You get familiar with the campus in a more relaxed atmosphere before the mad rush in the fall. They offer useful courses if you choose wisely that can count towards your major or GE requirements. The classes you take during FSSP can help lighten your load during quarters that would otherwise require a lot of units because of major classes and having to take a GE. I feel like it’s one of the best things you can do to increase your odds of success at UCSB. San Nic is in a very convenient location next to both DLG and Ortega dining commons.

Our son is signed up to do it because we had ready so many great things about it. San Nic is supposed to be a great dorm, too, and I believe you won’t risk getting a third person into a double as is done in some other dorms.

For those of us from out of state, we get instate tuition rates!!!

@queenofwien Unfortunately, it’s most likely your son will have a triple in San Nic. All those rooms were originally doubles that have been converted to triples. Most of the dorms freshmen end up in are like that. It’s not just UCSB, it’s like that at most of the UCs. It works out fine though. Hopefully he gets something with a nice view. The higher up you are, the better the view. Conversely, the lower you are, the less steps you have to climb every time. I hope he enjoys the experience. As long as he gets his work done, make sure he gets to the beach too. There will be less time for that during the regular school year.
