My son liked the vibe more at UCSB even though he’s not much of a party guy. Just felt smaller, tighter, and on the beach. Honors is a big edge but the sense is that UCSD might be stronger in his intended major.
Thoughts?

My thoughts are the differences between these 2 schools for an undergrad student are between slight and non-existent. 2 things are going to make a difference in his college experience as a History major. Chance and his own effort.
Chance in the sense that when he signs up for a given class does he get the teacher that really loves teaching and the subject, the TA that wants to get involved; or does he get the teacher resentfully doing the minimum since the college requires her/him to teach it (I had one prof that said “these are my office hours; don’t darken my doorway any other time” or words to that effect) and the non-english speaking TA assigned to cover a section as part of her/his funding package? Chance in the sense that the groups of friends he makes or avoids.
Effort meaning not only how much time does he study but does he make an effort to know some profs so he gets good letters or rec for grad school or employment.
I received a minor in History and Global Studies from UCSB and had some great professors. Professor Jorgensmeyer (spelling?) is phenomenal. UCSB is a really tight-knit community, with a very friendly student population. The party reputation comes from a few events each year where there are a lot of outsiders that come in town. The day-to-day life is really casual and strikes a great balance between working hard and enjoying down time with friends. There’s a reason why UCSB is in the top 10 for happiest students! Nice people, great weather, walkable community, etc. Being accepted with honors makes this a pretty easy decision, as priority registration is a big deal at a UC. Both excellent schools, so best of luck to your son!
I don’t know much about History at either school, but my S is not a partier and still loves it at UCSB for the same reasons yours picked up on. The Honors definitely helps reduce stress during enrollment times.
