ok, I got rejected to 5 Ucs I applied, only got in SB and Merced. I am going UCSB now for sure. I have a little concern, my friends keep telling me most people in UCSB get drunk all the time and they also do drugs. He said that I will get mess up if I go there...I don't think it is true. But could someone tell me about what is UCSB like?

My English teacher warned us not to apply to Merced. She said that since Merced needs students, the rest of the UC's will try to help Merced out and reject those kids who applied to Merced and other schools. It's just what I heard.

PS
I have a friend who goes to UCSB and he gets drunk all the time and has been known to have done some drugs. Just because he does, doesn't mean that everyone does though. Some do, some don't so it's up to you.

ahh, shouldn't apply merced, damn it!!! no one told me that...

Your friend must think you're very weak and impressionable to take up drugs and alcohol so casually.

well, i am a good kid...

oh man - thats completely untrue! thats probably the worst inferrence ive heard about the UC System yet!

Most people at UCSB do drink and/or do drugs, but this does not mean that you will "get messed up" when you go there. Many people are good at allotting time for partying and studying, but many are not. Just be one of the former, or resist all the temptations all together. I've also heard that, while it is abundant, partying does not come to the students as much as the students come to the parties, or in other words, there is rarely pressure to party.

Anyone know anything about ucsb honors?

I have read soo many people's comments concerning party's at SB. So obviously there are a lot of people who just don't like to party who are going there. And I am one of them as well. So, I'm sure it won't be hard to resist party's and make friends who do as well.

ya im going there, and i am by no means a party animal

I get really annoyed by all the people who tell me "Don't you know that UCSB is a party school?" because I feel underestimated as if they think that I'm ignorant.

Discipline is key. There will be the social pressures to attend parties at almost any school although the influence is probably stronger at UCSB. Still, I agree with calgurl. I'm sure that the party scene--as with all pressures--is avoidable.

i'm going to ucsb because i love the campus, the surrounding area, and regardless of it's reputation, you will get an amazing education. I do not plan on partying 24/7, as do much of you guys. I think that the reputation is slowly going away due to how difficult it has become to get in. i read somewhere that 94% of admitted students had over a 4.0... which is quite good. I think the incoming freshman will be much different people than the seniors that will be graduating this year.

94%?? That is a large percentage...if that is true than that means that the other 6% are all around my area because I know plenty of people who got in without a 4.0 gpa.

i got in with a 3.4

if you got in with a 3.4 did you have a lot of extracuriccular activities?

doesn't ucsb have the highest percentage of students with STD's?

Oh no, not that stupid STD stat again. Run a search on CC for the low down on that rumor.

Meh, as the saying goes "where there's smoke, there's fire"

rated top party school by Playboy mag, famed for their alcoholic and promiscuous student body.

Yeah, you'll forgive me if I don't discount the rumor as quickly as you have.

I'm no prude, but when playboy names you the top anything, it's time to reevaluate the situation. What's next? A glowing endorsement from High Times magazine?

there r parties in every campus. UCSB seems to have a lot of parties because we tend to be more together and concentrated. However, there are definitely a lot of people who dont drink or party at all. You can definitely find every type of person in here

we party hard, but we work hard too. it all depends on how you displace your time and what you decide your priorities are. if you dont want to party, you wont even know there is a party scene.
