For anyone interested, I used StatFinder to calculate the percentage of out of state students (Non-California domestic + International) for the Fall 2009 freshman class. Interestingly, UCSB actually ranks #3 among the UC system, slightly edging out UCSD (I rounded those two schools to two decimal places so you could see the difference). I guess that’s another point I can add to my unique fact sheets, and I’m guessing that’s due to the desirable location:

Berkeley: 10.4%
Davis: 3.0%
Irvine: 2.5%
Los Angeles: 10.5%
Merced: 1.6%
Riverside: 0.6%
San Diego: 4.48%
Santa Barbara: 4.51%
Santa Cruz: 3.1%

I’d be hesitant to recommend out-of-state students to UCSB unless it was for the College of Creative Studies, though my roommate for one year was from Texas (engineering major) and he loved the school. I guess if you have the money to blow it’s a school you can consider, otherwise I don’t think it’s a great value out of state.

Well yea, I wouldn’t spend 50k to do film studies or something. But I would consider spending 50k to get into their best programs like Physics or some of the Eng. departments, and if I get into the College of Creative Studies. It is too beautiful of an environment to overlook.
