I need to know which school is better for a southern california girl… UC Santa Barbara or Southern Methodist University in Dallas Texas. I can’t decide!

Definitely, handsdown, UCSB.

UCSB is definitely the way to go. :)

wow i thought iw as the only girl from southern california who applied to smu! i dont know which is better. id say smu, personally. i dont like the area around ucsb and the sbcc kids just blow any chance of ever wanting to get a good education and ditch the morons behind.

By all means see another part of the Country and go to SMU. The schools are about equal, but SMU will be more inreresting and give you exposure to different people.

My daughter has (among others) a choice between SMU Honors and UCSB. We are trying to determine what would be a better path for medical school.

My daughter is a freshman at SMU in the Honors program and is considering med school. There is a very strong advisor there who works closely with the kids. I don't have their statistics on med school acceptance though. If you
are seriously interested in that, checking with their Pre-Med advising program would be the thing to do.
I can't offer comments about UCSB--sorry, no experience with that one!

Have you spent time in Dallas? Texas will be a major culture shock for a SoCal girl.

We have spent time in Texas (relatives and friends there) and we haven't lived in CA my daughter's whole life (three years in the east) .

HAHHAAHHA A religious school vs. University of Casual Sex on the Beach? thats a great two to pick from.. i dont mean to be condenscending, i just thought that was funny. The party scene at UCSB is huge so if you are not into that thing, you might feel alienated. visit and find out.

SMU is also known as a party school in Texas -- a higher percentage of students in sororities and fraternities than at UCSB. If my D wants to party -- I know she'll find it wherever she goes to school and if she wants to succeed she'll do it despite the party scene.

whoa. did NOT know that. weird. well, smu. dr phil's son goes there.

Hey I'm a guy who lives in Dallas and is going to Cal Poly SLO (kinda opposite eh?). Anyways let me fill you in about SMU. It is a good school academically. The party scene is there, although it is not UCSB crazy. Dallas and SoCal contrast a lot obviouslly. No beach, no mountains, weird but usually OK weather here. The school is in a very upscale part of Dallas (Highland Park and Uptown). The school is not really that religious. Just my 2 cents.

It all depends on your "social" desires...UCSB is definitely a party school. Stop by on a Friday/Saturday night and you'll see what I mean.

Academically, I think they are both good for you. You can always go to UCSB and transfer, right?

Talk to your college counselor. But you should be proud that you got in to SMU...alot of boys at my son's school applied and were rejected.

definitely do not consider the culture shock to greatly because in reality, the two areas are not incredibly different besides the obvious (no beach, etc). To me, SMU seems like the college that is always shown in movies or described in books, so the college experience would be great. Also, there are many good programs at SMU.
