So i got a big fat Rejection from UC san diego so as of now i'm trying to decide between DAVIS and UCSB. My major is Computer Science, what do you guys think? I'd rather not be so close to home, and UCSB is rather close to home, but I hear that davis is somewhat desolate and theres not too much going on? Opinions?

I'm also a Computer Science major. In my opinion Davis is what you say (desolate), that's why I chose UCSB over UCD 3 years ago. However, I was also accepted into UCSD, and I chose UCSB also because SB had an overall warm and friendly feeling compared to the "cold" like feeling of the staff at SD. SD didn't have the college like town that I wanted to experience also. It's best that you visit each campus though to find what fits you best.

Being close to home isn't that bad also. I live 300+ miles away, and it'd be nice to visit home more often sometimes, rather than seemingly once every 3 months.

To my current knowledge, our Engineering dept is ranked higher than UCD's also.

Also, If you have any questions about CS classes, professors, fellow students there, experiences, prereqs, just let me know. :)

Visit both schools and get a feel for yourself. Academically, they're both about the same. It's kind of like UCLA or Berk (either is a good choice) but you choose the better fit.

Yeah i'm very impressed with UCSB I just dont know about the atmosphere. I don't want to go to a "beach" school like I hear UCSC is (which i also go into but dont want to go to). My #1 is that the comp sci department isnt some sidebar filler major they added in to keep their list thick. I really want my time spent in a comp sci major to be time well spent - are people in the comp sci major really into it? How are the classes? What's the atmosphere like?

Yen - Do you know anything about the political science major at UCSB, like how big the department is. Is there much politics on campus?

Please visit UCD before you decide that it is "desolate." My D has been to both UCSB and UCD numerous times and she prefers UCD. Her opinion of UCD is that it is both friendlier and more fun than UCSB. It is a true college town that is charming and full of activity. It depends a lot on what you like to do though. UCSB has little support for its sports teams and is more beach/party focused. Davis has tons of sports and outdoor activities. The students are very spirited and the athletics are loved and supported there. There are still plenty of parties to be found, but there are lots of other activities as well. She also feels that students at UCD have a better mix of the work hard/play hard mentality. Yen my D also did not like UCSD after three visits, and found the professors, students, and campus dull.

Tipping cows at UCD is as much fun as it can get over there lol

I wish I knew more on that, I tend to avoid politics. :\ I have a friend who is an ex-political science major, I can ask him for you.

UCSB has little support for its sports teams
[/quote]
That explains why our soccer team is top notch...

But then again (imo) America is really the only backward country where soccer isn't the most popular sport.

UCSB has little support for its sports teams and is more beach/party focused.

Average Attendances per game 05/06 seasons:

UCSB Men's Basketball: 1830
UCD Men's Basketball: 1433
UCSB Men's Soccer: 1542
UCD Men's Soccer: 354
UCSB Women's Volleyball: 569
UCD Women's Volleyball: 236

We're pulling in more fans for pretty much every sport I checked despite having about 7,000 less students and not being near a major urban area like Sacramento. Our soccer attedance was ranked 5th in the nation in 2004. Although UC Davis does have a football team.

I should make this clear; support by the AD (athletic directors) office, and the UC itself. Davis is now D1 and will soon be fully funded. UCSB is not fully funded. That bodes very well for the future of sports at Davis. Davis also has one of the largest sports program of any university in the country. Sports are definately a big deal in Davis.

If tipping cows is a sport, sure lol

well both colleges are about the same in academics and identical in the system except....ucsb is a better area where you dont have to smell crap and stuff

Well, having lived in Isla Vista for a few years -- it has its own smells with which to contend.

You have obviously never been to Davis. It is gorgeous there. It is a true college town. There are no cows to be seen anywhere on the UCD campus. It is tree lined, pristine and clean, filled with friendly students, and many bikes. The town is loaded with charm, and students are often outside playing sports, frisbee or picnicing. Inner tube water polo in the new Olympic sized Schaal Aquatic Center is a super popular student activity. Frat/sorority life is huge. They are in the process of building a new football arena, and there is a newly opened student athletic facility that is amazing. There is a great mix of work hard/play hard. The students are overwhelmingly very happy in Davis. I have visited the campus numerous times, and never smelled any cow dung :)

"I don't want to go to a "beach" school"

I suggest you go to Davis if you don't want to be at the beach.

*I should make this clear; support by the AD (athletic directors) office, and the UC itself. *

I'll concede that point, and there's a lot of us crazy Gaucho Locos upset about it.
