UCSB or UCSD

@ twistnswif, no 1 curr.

If you want to go for slightly better academic prestige go to SD. If you want EVERYTHING else go to SB. I hate to say it but there are a lot of nerds at SD.

i dunno guys, i’ve visited my friend in ucsb quite a few times, and it seems like most people there suffer from serious cases of fomo…plus i dont like how its sooo far away from the major cities. davis has sac town, berk has sf, sd has sd, la has la…honestly i feel like the only reason it ended up thriving was because of the beach haha. just one person’s opinion though.

if i could offer one peice of advice, it would be that you should go wherever you can imagine yourself being able to poop comfortably.

So what if UCSD is full of nerds? Nerds run this world, not std bound party junkies.

UCSD >>>>> UCSB

@kissophelia

why didnt your friend like the political science classes at SB?
did you like yours at SD?
do you guys think theres a difference in difficulty between the two schools’ courses?
Im a poli sci major to, deciding between these two schools.

No, socially awkward nerds DON’T run the world…

^not sure why you assume students who attend ucsd are socially awk nerds. i know 4 people who go there currently, and one is on the dance team, the other on the volleyball team, the third in a sorority, and the fourth is competing nationally for some dance competition (cant remember what kind of dance). they’re some of the most engaging and interesting people i know!
but maybe youre just ■■■■■■■■…

It seems there are a lot of bitter people on here. Just because you got denied by UCSD doesn’t mean you have to attack its credibility. Everyone here knows that they are both great schools. If you are social, you will thrive at either. If you are an immature ******bag, you will be hated at both.

@babyygurl If you are a Political Science major, I would definitely go with UCSD. I love my classes and my professors. UCSD has better a far better Political Science department than UCSB. It is comparable to, if not arguably better than, UCLA’s Political Science program depending on your focus (UCSD is better in international politics/relations than UCLA). My friend’s biggest regret is that he feels that the education he’s getting in his UCSB Poli Sci classes aren’t any better than the lower division courses we took at community college. He also looked at the UCSD course catalog and says we have a better selection of (more interesting) classes.

If you look at the ranking for the top Political Science graduate schools, UCSD is ranked #7 right behind Berkeley (#6) and above UCLA (#11). Then it follows with Davis (#24, close proximity to Sacramento), Irvine (#36), and then UCSB at #49. While the ranking is for graduate school, it does reflect on the undergraduate program as well because the same grad school professors also teach upper division undergrad classes. Also, the graduate school students accepted into the program are TAs who will be leading your discussions and helping you out in office hours. There will also be more internship and job opportunities in the field at UCSD, because it is closer to a metropolitan city than UCSB is.

If you have any more questions, I’m happy to answer them.

^ i might attend UCSD if I don’t get into UCLA or UC Berkeley. Are there any poly sci professors at SD that you recommend taking?

@kobeftw Definitely. Professors I’ve taken that I like are Fonna Forman-Barzilai, Darren Schreiber (if you like a challenge), Peter Galderisi, and Glenn Smith (open book/open note exams). Everybody sings nothing but glorious praises about Victor Magagna, but I haven’t been able to take his class yet because of his popularity (even my friend who’s an applied math major has heard of him). The class holds 200 people and by the time my pass time came around the waitlist was up to 250. By the first day of class the waitlist was up to 400. I finally get to take two of his classes this summer so I’m really excited. He’s supposed to be an amazing lecturer.

The professors bios and web pages can be found here, so you can see their specialties: [Faculty[/url]

I just went for a tour of UCSB the other day and plan to go tour UCSD very soon. Been accepted to both schools for Film/Media Studies (Visual Arts/Media at UCSD). If anyone has any questions or wants to see my photos from my tour at UCSB feel free to ask.

@lexapower Please do post photos of UCSB, that would be great!

@kissophelia
my focus is more towards american politics and constitutional law
that helps a lot, thank you!
I looked through those courses at SD and some of them seem sooo interesting (i feel like a nerd lol). I cant find any that seem interesting just by the title and description at SB.

A waitlist of 250? thats crazy!
I cant imagine that thats normal… how does anyone get any classes then?
do you know if its the same for SB poli sci?
The highest waitlist i’ve seen at my CC has been about 60, and I thought that was big.

UCSD is a good school.

UCSB is a good school.

You can have a good time at UCSD.

You can have a good time at UCSB.

:)

@babyygurl Haha, no, that’s not normal. I’ve never had a problem getting into any other poli sci classes here. It’s only that one professor’s class. :)

@lexapower please post pics of UCSB! I’m thinking of double majoring I’m film studies there :)

@ jaynami, nerds don’t rule the world. ****s do. There’s a difference. It takes a lot of *baggery and selfishness to be a world class **. Every powerful person in the world, they’re all ***BAGS. Powerful people need to be SOCIABLE, charismatic, wealthy, and smart enough to cheat people. Those “nerds” at UCSD are the people that these powerful people steal from and claim it as their own. They’re the people that will run you down with their car and backup and run you over one last time to make sure that they got you.

That special type of breeding takes place on the east coast of the United States :D!

@staticgalvanism, I took some photos of UCSB, SB, and Solvang. I’ll post here:

Took a little more, but that’s about it. Was too tired to take photos. I took some other ones on my SLR–but I’ve only processed the film so they’re all just negatives.

^ ummm these ‘nerds’ you talk about become engineers and scientists which make the world turn you dumb ass. You see the plane you use to travel the world? you see the computer your using right now? they were all devloped by nerds you dumb ass. I know a guy, he was a huge sterotypical “nerd” guess what, he got his phd at Cal in physics and works for the government on researching military technology. Almost every piece of technology you use, from your cell phone, to the car you drive was engineered by a “nerd”. You are such a coward. You think you have to be a **bag to be successful in this world? Keep thinking like that and you will find your life completely empty one day. YES, its a tough world out there, and go ahead be a bag you sad soul. But don’t talk down on nerds because if it wasnt for them we would be in the stone age. You sound dumber and dumber every time you post, please just stop.

kissophelia, thanks for the info on the political science programs. i’m considering between ucsb and umass amherst (im currently in mass). i spoke with somebody at admissions at ucsd a few months back and they basicially said “unless you have a very high gpa, it’s unlikely that tag’s will leave you any chance of getting in.” so i was sure of not getting in. but i still haven’t received word. the only thing that’s giving me any hope, despite not having any taking prerequisites but tentatively signing up for 4 this summer, is that i received an e-mail from ucsd last week asking me for my grade so far in stat’s, which is a b. i told them that i was confident of earning an a-.

my gpa is 3.56 with 17 classes taken since last winter. at my cc we have 2 semesters, not the quarterly that you guys have. any ideas on my chances? i’m willing to entertain anybody’s opinion (no offense  at this point :))

thanks
