hi, I am kinda new to this forums so forgive me if I am not posting in the right place.

I just got accepted into both UCSB and UCSD, and I heard both of them are good enough for my history major. So now I am faced with a dilemma... which one is the best choice for history major and overall college experience? I visited both places, and I have to admit I liked the UCSB atmosphere more.... but UCSD supposedly is ranked a bit higher than UCSB :

So yeah, what do you guys think? Which one would you go to?

If I was you, I would go with the school that feels the best. I definitely wouldn't base the final decision on prestige. You only live once--I think.

socially UCSB owns UCSD
but college is after all what you make of it.
UCSB is more of a college town, got great local food
and has way better girls if your a guy.

UCSD on the other hand has better prestige but if ur not a science or engineering major it probably doesnt make much of a difference.
TRiton vision yes, the school is not the most attractive physically.

Another thing to consider is if your asian.
There seems to be many on CC.
SB asian population is much lower about 20 percent
while UCSD is near 50 percent. so that depends to you.

Personally I would pick UCSB (and unless I get into UCLA/UCB I will go there) but thats because I got into their honors program and they have an accounting emphasis for their business econ major... and because I have a cousin there that is like my best friend lol

anyways my advice wuold be that if you liked UCSB better you should go there... Idk bout the girls though, the ones I met that go there are kinda dirty slutty, not really my kind of girl...

UCSB is such a party school. I went to the cc in SB but won a raffle to stay in the dorms on UCSB campus. Drank soooo much. Flunked out and had to move back home. Take caution with going to UCSB. It's a good school though.

I would just pick the college that feels more right to you. You should definitly check out both schools and then make your decision. Overall UCSD is more prestiges but for a history major like everyone said both schools probably have equally as good history departments. I have actually had several professors that went to school at UCSB and they loved it. I had one professor who was a history major that went to grad school at UCSB and another professor was a history major that went to undergrad there.

I'm having the same problem.. it has pretty much come down between ucsd and ucsb. I know LA and ucb have yet to release decisions but I think ultimately, it'll come down to sb or sd.

there are several things keeping me away from sd:

the housing situation
the fact that I have to take more extra courses to graduate from the college I was accepted to for their separate requirements (which might delay my expected grad date... which is a HUGE no no)
the social situation at the school (It's not like I want to go to ucsb and binge drink every weekend in iv... and I'm sure I can find somewhat of a social life for myself at sd but seriously, ucsd needs to wise up in this regard because I need a slightly higher level of social stimulation)

the only con to UCSB for me is that it's ranked below san diego... but looking at the pros and cons, that just seems like a LAME con.

Yeah if UCLA accepts me I am definitely going there, but if it doesn't then its gonna be SB or SD. It seems I am putting too much emphasis on this whole prestige thing; after all, it's not like the history major is a big deal, especially for those two colleges. Most likely its gonna be SB...
unless LA says yes!

there is a rule that I heard from a friend right before I transferred to UCSD last year and he transferred to UCSB, he said " Do I want to have a good social life ( UCSB) or a good eduacation ( UCSD ) ? "
now thats more of a joke, but he chose UCSB and me SD, both for Econ. See both schools and talk to history kids on both sides.
Also try using livejournal for UCSD and UCSB, I know at least UCSD has their own site and ask the hist. kids about the dept

I guess for me it's... "do I want to have the opportunity to enjoy myself at school, have a decent gpa, participate in the honors program and go abroad without extending my graduation time or sacrifice some of those things for some 'prestige'?"

well what do you mean by enjoying yourself?
in UCSD you can enjoy yourself by-
by going to triton games,, going to gaslamp in downtown SD, going to the 2nd biggest gym in the uc system, hitting up one of the nicest beaches, and joining all these clubs and activities NOW>>> partying like *ing nuts and drinking your ass off as you parade around goleta and IV all Fed up and doing it all over again next weekend? thats UCSB

as for having a decent GPA, realize that UCs are hard and transferring will be hard, Everyone I know at UCSD and people I know at UCLA who all transferred all said it hit them hard ( for the first few months, I dont mean for you to panic ) , what can you do? study your ass off once your at either UC,

regarding honors programs, I dont know of any overall ones in UCSD but the econ dept has an honors program, hard to get into but thats cuz you have to have a pretty damn good gpa
check this link out UCSD Department of Economics
this is the Undergraduate student handbook at UCSD, read it as much as you can cuz it will give some good info but specifically check out item "department honors"

go abroad? UCSD is the number one go abroad UC in the UC system, the UC actually sent out a report on the lack of UC kids going abroad except for UCSD

as for prestige, the hell with it, UCs are good, now UCSD is ranked higher so thats the "prestige you'll get" im not selling prestige

Hope all this helps, post more info and hopefully I can help you out
but remember go visit the schools, see what makes you happy
if you are happy as hell at UCSB and you love the place, then the hell with UCSD go for SB or vice versa, this is all little info , UCs are all great

I don't have much against ucsd... if anything, it's in a beautiful setting by a fun cosmopolitan city.

having said that,

ALL UCs offer the SAME programs to study abroad through EAP: http://eap.ucop.edu/ however, because of the EXTRA requirements I would need to fulfill before graduating I would most likely NOT have the chance to go abroad for a quarter.

I'm sure I can find a nice social circle anywhere, but it seems more attainable at a campus like ucsb. This also ties in with the issue of housing. Now, I am certain that after looking around I can find something 3 miles off campus and get myself a roommate online...but that's not my ideal living situation. so kill me if I'm looking to have a slightly more involved first-year living experience.

I am not, as mentioned in a previous post, looking to get obliterated every weekend.

I truly think it all boils down to your personal priorities and perspective. I am not looking to get hired the quarter after I graduate... so the things most important to me are keeping up a good GPA, undergrad research & intern opportunities and study abroad for admission to graduate school.

Now, I know that I don't live in a perfect world, but I feel that UCSB is more likely to give me the above.
