I got accepted to UCSB and I'm really interested in going. However, I've already been accepted into Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Rutgers is very close to my home and very inexpensive, compared to UCSB. Do you know of any advantages that UCSB would have over Rutgers, or any other OOS school for an OOS student? Thanks!

not much.

rutgers is cheaper undoubtedly…

ucsb is great if you want to get close to cutting edge STEM research and famous scientists (the school has a crapload of nobel laureates). very pretty town (and campus ), nice people. good reputation amongst employers. students seem to really like it.

BUT note the massively expensive and still rising tuition, the potential of losing faculty, budget cuts; over the top drunken parties, 30% STD rate, a lot of weird people etc etc

with a 30% STD, I am going to open up a disease clinic, I will be rich …

Over the top drunken parties a con for college? Sounds like somebody doesn’t know how to have fun! But in all seriousness, the 30% STD rate.
just my two cents

Rutgers was our main rival to get Danny Mcbride and James Franco here. haha

I’m in the same boat

To be OOS you have to be rich to pay full cost or have an extremely good scholarship for 4 years

I have neither :(

Oh well

out of state price to attend UCSB $47,000

roundtrip airfare newark to lax $490

Being asked daily if you know the “situation” Priceless

Catching an std on the beach, under moonlight after the gauchos lose yet another first round game … Again priceless

How can a UCSB undergrad degree be worth 100k more in the job market over a Rutgers degree? Spend the money on grad school, not under grad, and always use protection or attend BYU and sign the honor code. lol

People need to stop exaggerating the STI’s at UCSB. The actuall STI rate at UCSB is actually LOWER than the national average at other colleges. According a report done by UCSB sociology professor John Baldwin in 2002, only 6% of UCSB student have STI/STD’s. Compared to the national average of 1 in 4, this rate is much lower.

RU0123, we all know that UCSB has a great social scene. Also, UCSB definitely has some great academic programs, such as physics, chemical engineering, and so on. What major would you be?

guys, if you are worry about STDs, then use 2 condors, or even 3 condors !!!

bottom line: ucsb is a good school, but its a terrible choice for an OOS student solely because of its massive tuition (they dont really give aid to OOS students either). practically anything is better.

i would also argue the same for UCLA and berkeley, both of which attract more OOS students

Terrible choice for OOS students? Are you high? Sorry but is UCSB expensive for us OOS students? Yes, certainly their is no denying that. However if you are able to afford it, even if you have to take out loans, then the SB experience is TOTALLY worth it. I grew up in NJ and always dreamed of going to a highly ranked school, on the west coast, in a sunny warm climate, and I found that at SB. Add in that we have an amazing Environmental Studies program (my major) and I think this was the opposite of a terrible choice…it was the best decision of my life. Also look and compare UCSB to many other schools on the east coast that are highly ranked including many of the privates. By the time I graduate here SB will probably be a top 35 university in the country (39th now) which is surrounded by the likes of BC, NYU, UCSD etc. etc.

im OOS aswell(DC) and im wondering if i should go to UCSB and have fun while paying 200k or go to a small LAC(rhodes) have fun but only pay 120k

im thinking business aswell so id prolly have to go to grad school
what should i do?

no offense but Memphis is probably not the place you want to spend the next four years of your life…def. SB…if you think your gonna have fun at Rhodes then your gonna be blown away with UCSB
