UCSB Out of State

Does anyone have any suggestions on getting into UCSB from out of state?

It's the same for instate. Check SB's common data set and work to improve your numbers, which are about the same for OOS as they are instate. Don't forget about the year-long VAPA course requirement (visual and performing arts).

fwiw: With few specific program exceptions (and none at SB), I do not think the UCs are worth the OOS price, particuarly since OOS finaid is poor.

Thanks. Where can i find out more about VAPA? Is it a prerequisite for admission or is it a requirement for graduation?

It's just a one-year arts class. This includes band/orchestra, choir, video production, drawing and art, acting, etc. It satisfies your requirement for admission.

:)

You take this at UCSB or you need to do it in high school?

In high school. =)

so...if from out of state, and if accepted to ucsb, do you guys think it's worth it? i hear with the current economic situation that it may "not be worth" going to one of the UC's because they're struggling. All i know is I would LOVE to go to school in santa barbara, but i want a good education too and i have got into some other pretty good schools, not in cali though :(

I wonder the same exact thing barton. I guess it all depends on your situation. For me, it would possibly be worth it because my family has expressed serious interests of moving to Santa Barbara when they retire. But, my old man says he has NO interest if there isn't at least one of his children out there with them- something about my mom and dad wanting to be close to their grandchildren whenever that may be. My sister is in college already (locally) so I guess it might be up to me.

Then again, should I get in, should I go to UCSB just so my family can potentially fulfill its dream (and my own, to be honest)? Although I absolutely love the school and know I'll be receiving a top-notch education, I don't know if spending a fifth of one million dollars is justifiable.

Why? Surfing? Parties? STDs? What's the attraction?

For close to $50k per year, no way, unless your family is RICH. But, even then, I'd recommend a private college any day. (Smaller classes, better counseling, better career services, better alumni support, LESS bureaucracy....)

I trust that they know that SB is one of the most expensive place for housing in California....

Yes, STDs is what really attracts me to santa barbara...haha no. I just think it's gorgeous and would be a completely different environment from the town i grew up in, which is also where i may have to end up if i don't go to ucsb, because we have a really good school right here in my hometown that i got into. i would just really like to get away for at least 4 years, but then again staying here would be much cheaper and i would get an equal if not better education. so it's a hard decision.

“so...if from out of state, and if accepted to ucsb, do you guys think it's worth it?”

Absolutely, I am from out of state and love it here. Yes, it is expensive especially compared to what instate students pay, but my home state, even going to a public university would be 30,000+. UCSB is a top 40 school!! I don’t why know why people forget that. UCSB has so many resources for its students, but it is up to them so seek help. Nothing is given to you here, but that is life, you need to work for what you want. I go here from out of state and would not consider myself "RICH". I get that stereotype a lot from people here, but most of the other private east coast schools that are not nationally ranked were more expensive than going to UCSB. I definitely made the right choice! And someone should want to go to school in Santa Barbara; it is amazing city/campus….STD’s give me a break that is such a stereotype...

I think UCSB is a great school, and for CA residents a good deal. For out of state, though, no way. For almost 50K/year you can go to a school with smaller classes, more personal attention, an assigned faculty member, etc. For that matter you can go to a large state school in your own state and have 10-20K per YEAR left over to take summer vacations on the beach.

you guys say its not worth it to come to UCSB if your from out of state, but what if your other option is University of Colorado... i think UCSB is a way better school, academically and socially, so does the price really make it not worth it?

im from CO and im sick of the people and the weather so i was really excited to come to SB but idk what to think if all of you guys are saying its not worth it.

We welcome all comers to our great UCs for a "world-class education". Just don't forget to bring your checkbooks.

Its a value judgement... If you have the grades and scores to get into UCSB, which is a reasonably selective school, then you and your $45K/year have lots of other options in this country. IMHO there are better values for that kind of money.

I got in and i'm out of state. My options are PLU and University of Arizona. HAHAHA.
I'm going to Santa Barbara. I need out of my utterly crappy town in Washington. I want the beach and the sunshine. And people! This town is too small.

We’re from Chicago area, and my son is going to UCSB this fall. Definitley expensive…and surprised no merit scholarship money offered like everywhere else he got in…but he loves it there and I think the school has a ton to offer academically too. We’re thrilled he’ll be attending UCSB!
