UCSB Pre-major

I am a fall 2010 transfer student to UCSB. My community college didn't offer articulation course work for my pre-major and I am stuck needing to take pre-major classes at the UC.

I took a trip down to UCSB and talked to a department peer advisor and she advised me to take 1 pre-major course a quarter and fill the rest of my schedule with electives. The reasoning for only taking 1 pre-major course at a time is that pre-major courses need a 3.0 or better grade to get into the major and if I get overwhelmed and get a lower grade, I will not be able to retake the course (unless I fail it)--thus expelling me from my major.

I need to complete 3 pre-major courses to get into my major. If I follow the peer advisor's advice, upon completion of courses, I will not get into my upper division major course work until late spring quarter 2011.

So, my question is DO I follow the peer advisor's plan? Should I try to take on two required pre-major classes during my first or second quarter?

If so, I have no idea which electives to enroll in.

Plus, I live 5 hours away from UCSB and I cannot find any way to contact my department advisors over the phone.

I don’t know about your advisor’s advice, but as far as electives go, have you considered minoring (or even double-minoring) in something? If so, you I would suggest putting that electives space to use.

I’m transferring to UCSB too, and this is what my academic advisor told me regarding my classes for the fall semester. He pretty much said that you should try and sign up for however many classes you feel you SHOULD take, and to get a feel for these classes in the first few days. If you think there’s a good chance you might be overwhelmed, just drop the classes by the deadline.

if you actually study and keep up with your work, i dont see why you cant take all three at the same time. it really depends on what your major is of course, but the plan that your advisor came up with is…gross. or maybe take 1 the first quarter to get a feel for the place and classes, and then take 2 the next quarter.

@redoplease: I was thinking exactly that. Maybe get a feel for things in the first quarter, then go a take two the next just to get them over with. I just don’t want to spend excess time and money taking electives.

From what I understand, I need 40 core units from my major and 20 units from Letters & Sciences electives. Does this sound correct?

@mikech where you on campus last week during orientation?

Yeah, I went on Monday

yupyup i say go for the 2 quarter deal! and im not sure about sb’s requirements sorry :/
