UCSB shallow?

I wasn't planning on attending UCSB, I was totally prepared for Davis. Turns out, I was rejected there, waitlisted to San Diego, and accepted to SB. Everybody knows about SB's rep for parties and pretty people. And from my experience, the pretty girls who love to party TEND to be more shallow. I've always been both vain and insecure, and I really don't want to get caught in the whole fight for the spotlight again. I just don't want to feel pressured to be pretty to be accepted. Davis may just be a cowtown, but it's supposed to be really laid back and friendly. For any current students, how does Santa Barbara compare?

Sorry in advance if anyone from SB finds this offending:/

Yes there ARE plenty of pretty people here, but that doesn’t mean you can’t fit in. UCSB is full of diversity. Most of the people here are very laidback, accepting, and always willing to make friends if you’re not too shy to just introduce yourself  Of course you can be pretty popular if you try, but at the same time, if you wanted to, the school is big enough for you to be just a name (this is no exception for any other schools). Every school have parties, but UCSB got it’s party rep because the town right next to it is ruled by college students, thus the parties are always within walking distance. If you’re the type who don’t like to party, you have no worries also. There are plenty of students who like to live quietly and study. There are places all around campus that are made to get away from all the parties to have quiet peaceful time studying.

I got waitlisted at UCD but definitely don’t want to go there anyways. I live in Sacramento and have for my whole life. It’s the same with Sac State, which is is basically down the street from me.
I’d rather have whatever UCSB has because it’s SO boring here and from what I’ve seen, Davis is pretty quiet. We went on a field trip to UCD and I wasn’t feeling it.
I wouldn’t mind fun, open people. It’s what I’ve been wanting for like forever.

LOL! Stereotypes will always remain what they are: stereotypes. College, just like life, is what you make of it! I’m sure you or your friends have been stereotyped and has it always been true? Not always. Just because Davis is known as a “cowtown”, does that mean you’re not going to meet vain people who are shallow? Nope. They’re all over the world lol. Everyone has their moments.

There will always be vain people, ugly or not haha. It’s a matter of confidence. I don’t think this ONE aspect should stop you from attending UCSB. I think you should still go, just try not to party as much, or party with people you’re comfortable with?

@myKitsune - Oh wow, I live in [South] Sacramento and I was waitlisted for Davis, too! HAHA. I wouldn’t say that Sacramento is THAT boring, there’s always parties, Downtown, Mid-Town, the ghetto to explore (LOL), things to do, and surely you haven’t met everyone in Sacramento/Elk Grove. (-:

@jennny I know what you mean, maybe not put in those exact words, but I definitely don’t want my college experience to be a popularity contest like high school. I want to easily make friends and not be afraid that I’m not pretty enough or that I don’t party every weekend. Is that how you’re feeling?

Haha, thanks for the insight. I’d hate to be stuck in a school where a majority of people just worry about how they look, and hopefully I won’t get sucked into the party scene.

@admissionhopeful Yeah I’ve always had this irrational belief that I had to look my best everyday to be accepted. But the games are getting boring, and i’m ready to enjoy just being myself. Idk, here’s to hoping we’ll like SB(: ?

@jennny Me too! I am so ready for a fresh start and to meet new people. I haven’t decided for sure on sb yet because I was hesitant, for these reasons we’re talking about. But chances are, I’ll probably end up there but I’m really nervous!

For those that were accepted to UCSB can I ask what you gpa and sat score was? (I am a junior in high school)

3.5gpa 1700 sat. Biological sciences major

3.7GPA, 1730, Biopsychology

people worry too much about this crap.
it’s a school first and foremost, even if you find it to be “shallow” you should focus on academics.

as you mature, you will find a balance between the periphery of social life and what really matters (i.e. your career)

3.7 UC GPA 2010 SAT pre chem, but probably going to switch to a bio field.

3.91UC GPA 1850 SAT Pre-psy, prob gon switch to math >.>

3.8 UC GPA 2150 SAT for philosophy. Want to switch to econ/math.

@jleeeem - 1620 3.5GPA Communicationsssss ha.

There are shallow people wherever you go in life. Just because UCSB has a “party school” reputation doesn’t mean it has more shallow people. It has this reputation for one reason: after first year, the majority of students live in Isla Vista. With thousands of college students in one concentrated area, parties are going to happen. Whether you want to participate in these parties or not is entirely your decision and the parties won’t affect you if you do not wish them to.
UCSB has no more shallow girls or guys than any other university campus.

Just a heads up, don’t make a judgment on someone that because they’re pretty or like to party that they’re shallow.

3.8 UC gpa 2260 SAT. Psychology.

For the Junior in HS:
3.59 Un

Math: 640
CR: 690

For the Original Poster:

After my rejection from my target (UCSD), I was relatively devastated. Then my friend had stated that UCSB was her first choice. I decided to research a bit and found that, contrary to what I believed before, UCSB is a high mid-tier school that is actually competitive.
I currently have two UC’s to choose from: UCD and UCSB. Considering that UCSB’s ranking in teaching Comp.Eng. is better than UCD’s (as well as constantly lauded around these forums) I naturally lean toward UCD.

But then I hear that SB is a “party school,” from my friends and from others around the forums. That intimidates me as well.

But for every five ignorant posts about UCSB being a party school is one ACTUAL UCSB student that always says: “The party scene isn’t shoved down your throat; there’s no pressure to party. Every school has a party scene. Ours is a little more prevalent, yes, but that’s for locational reasons. If we partied so much, how is it possible that we’re academically competitive against UCD and UCI? Either we’re actually that amazing, or we work hard as well.”

Naturally, I take the UCSB student’s evidence over others.

Is UCSB shallow? It doesn’t seem that way. I constantly hear things that say that everyone at UCSB is incredibly laid back. I’m sure that there are a few apples that threaten to spoil the bunch, but they’re not abundant.

In the end, most colleges are only different in vibe and atmosphere - both of which are influenced by location. There are idiots everywhere in every college; this teaches us how to avoid them so we can use the things we learn in real life, as there are sure to be much worse people out there.
