So I just got rejected from UCSB, the school I tagged to, and I am very confused. I followed all of the requirements and only have two pre-req courses which is fine for my major (Biology) because they place you into a pre-major. I have a 3.8 with loads of volunteering, work hours, research opportunities, and everything you could think of. Is this happening to anyone else because so far I know two people who this has happened to.
I presume you met these requirements as noted on assist?
ADMISSION SELECTION CRITERIA:
To be admitted to the Pre-Biological Sciences major, all transfer students must
complete the following:
(1) One year sequence of General Chemistry with laboratory, with no individual
grade lower than “C”;
(2) Complete sequence (2-3 terms) of major-applicable General Biology with
laboratory, with no individual grade lower than “C”
Yes, I complete both of those. I only have physics left to complete which they said I could do there once I was in as a pre-major
That seems very peculiar. I don’t see why they wouldn’t have accepted your TAG. This is from their TAG information PDF:
“Some UCSB majors require students to complete remaining major preparation courses with a minimum GPA after transfer in order to advance to full major status. For majors with these pre-major requirements, TAG applies to admission to the pre-major. Meeting TAG requirements does not guarantee that a student will fulfill the pre-major requirements after transfer. Major preparation articulation agreements (found online at www.assist.org) include detailed information about the pre-major. Students may contact UCSB academic department advisors to discuss their plans to transfer and get more information about the pre-major.”
The only thing I can think of is math. They’re very strict with that. Did you complete at least one math course with a C or better prior to Spring 2016? From what I understand, UCSB is very strict on that requirement.
If you did, then the only piece of advice I can offer is to contact admissions. Most of what you hear here will be pure speculation. Email admissions (that way you have a “paper” trail) and inquire as to why your TAG was rejected.
Yeah, I completed the Calculus sequence with A’s. Thanks for the help
Admission can always pull up your application and view the comments that were made by the officers. Hopefully it is at least something that would be grounds for an appeal. Good luck!
I would definitely appeal that if what you’re saying is really true. There are many less qualified applicants being accepted. Plus, a TAG with that GPA should be a stone cold lock
Appeal… That’s very odd. TAG should be a guarantee. Is Physics required for admission?
Did you meet the unit requirements?
contact UCSB to see what happened. Also check with the xfer center at your CC to see if they can help. I hope it’s just a mistake and you can get it straightened out.
Im on the same boat as I also tagged to UCSB but I got rejected. I found out that I did not have enough credits as I did not know that the UCs limit the amount of Pre-calculus units one can get so I was under 90 units. I changed that now in the spring as I am taking two more classes in the spring to bump my units above 90. I will also appeal my decision. But like the others said I would call the UCSB Admissions to see why you got rejected.
l just got rejected by UCSB today. my gpa is3.7 and l did tag…
Did you meet with a counselor to certify your tag after you submitted it?
is it very important to certify tag? l do not understand why l get rejected? even if l do not do the tag, my GPA is enough as a transfer student.
@Xie811 Did you complete all the pre-reqs for UCSB, and unfortunately just having a high GPA doesn’t guarantee you anything. The people who are accepted always have a wide range of GPAs.
Go over the TAG Matrix. It lists all the requirements. Did you complete 30 semester/45 quarter units before submitting your TAG excluding AP/IB/A-level credits? Are you going to finish in the Spring with 60 semester/90 quarter minimum units? Did you finish your math and english requirements in Fall 2015? Just go over the Matrix and make sure you covered everything. If you still don’t know why, call and ask why?

Also, I think if you didn’t finish all of your pre-reqs for your major, it may have rejected your TAG. I know someone said that you can finish one of them at the school, but that may have been wrong information. For TAG, UCSB says “All Economics majors and Biological Sciences majors in the College of Letters and Science strongly recommended to complete lower-division major preparation for all other majors” I know it says “strongly recommended” but I think they would look more favorably to students who have finished all their pre-reqs for their major prior to submitting the TAG over those who haven’t.
@boxandwhiskers well strongly recommended shouldnt matter for a tag. As long as he completes all the requirements. But who knows haha
