Hi, I'm a first year at UCSB with sophomore standing and by the end of this year, I will have at least 85 units and be junior standing. I came to UCSB without thinking about the social aspects and ended up hating it midway through winter quarter. I'm a Mathematical Sciences major with a 3.69 GPA right now, but it will probably lower to a 3.4 after this winter quarter. I want to transfer to UCSD, but I obviously applied for Fall Quarter too late. Is there anyway that I can be in UCSD by sometime next academic year? And what do you guys think are my chances of getting accepted into UCSD?

you can find all kinds of stats about students transferring into UCSD at http://studentresearch.ucsd.edu/stats-data/admissions/transfer.html

There are 2 issues you’ll face. The first is that UCs give preference in admission to CC students. Supposedly UC transfers come next. So it may take a higher GPA from another UC to get in.

The bigger issue is you simply may have too many units. According to the webpage at https://admissions.ucsd.edu/transfers/requirements.html
Now before you get too worried, keep in mind there have been some changes in the transfer rules that may not be reflected in that webpage. In particular, if you have taken all lower-division classes so far there may be an exception carved out; the rules are kinda murky, at least to my reading. I suggest you try to find the right person to advise you. Maybe start at the UCSB admissions office and see if they can help you or direct you to someone who can.

There is only one way I now of that you can be at UCSD next academic year, a plan that works on paper but may not be allowed anymore. That is the idea of taking regular courses via UCSD Extension. See <a href=“Concurrent Enrollment | Continuing Education | UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies”>http://extension.ucsd.edu/about/index.cfm?vAction=concurrent This doesn’t solve the problem of actual transfer admission, and you’re probably not eligible for on-campus housing (but most UCSD students live off-campus anyway). Before jumping at that be sure to talk with the UCSD folk to make sure you’ll actually be able to register for the classes you want to take; if the classes are turning away regular UCSD students then its unlikely they’ll open a seat for an Extension student.

Best of luck to you.

You can apply for UCSD next fall for fall 2015. Junior standing is 90+ units. I’m assuming your high unit standing is from AP or IB units. Those won’t be held against you in the admissions process.
