Hello!
I have a tough decision ahead of me, and I was looking for some advice. I live in California, about 2 hours from UCSB, and I would not mind staying relatively close to home, though I do not know if I would end up regretting the distance, though I think I would be okay with the distance.
I would be paying in-state tuition for UCSB, and obviously out of state for Michigan, though I am getting help from family somewhat financially so I don't have to fully base my decision on that, though that is on my mind. I like the atmosphere of both of these colleges, and I want to have a 'true' college experience of both education and fun, which is why I took UCSD off of my list because I felt the atmosphere was poor and the campus was not a pleasant place.
There are a few other factors that I think are important to me. I am undecided for my major, though I aim to go into either computer science or an engineering program. Would the difference between these two (knowing UMich is known for having better programs) be that great for undergrad?
And my final worry is the perception of UCSB, as I know it is a good school, but I feel that the perception of it as a 'party' school is extremely negative. Any thoughts or recommendations? Thanks!

save the money, state instate.

btw: you might check with the folks in AA whether its even possible to switch into Engineering. If not…

Thanks for the advice!
If I were to do CS, I would be able to stay in LSA, and it is possible to transfer to the College of Engineering.

Can you be more specific?

A UC will cost you about $30k

UMich will cost over $50k per year

How much will your parents be paying? How will you pay the rest?

Sure!
For UCSB i got about $9000 financial aid/scholarships, so it will be approx. $21000.

For UMich they required a copy of my mom’s taxes and a variety of other forms before I could get an estimate, therefore it will still be a few days before I hear for that unfortunately.

My parents/grandparents are attempting to support me through college (I’m the only 3rd generation in my family tree). My grandparents are from Michigan, and my grandmother is an Alumni from there, and they are willing to help me go there if I so choose. I am fortunate that they are letting me make the decision for myself. However…

I don’t feel 100% comfortable making my parents/grandparents take such a financial burden even though they say there are willing, therefore the financial aspect of it is mainly me wanting to keep the costs down in general, for my peace of mind and their financial sake.
