If you were to choose between those 3 schools, which one would you go to and why?

UCSB, i think it's the most diverse statistically and has the best location of all three(in my opinion), and unless you don't enjoy socializing why not?

yeah UCSB is the best of those
UCI is not highly ranked; UCD may be as good as UCSB but I prefer UCSB

academically all three are the same. but ucsb has a better overall engineering education, and a great location

Definitely UCSB. I just came back from there (my friend goes there), and it was one of the most fun weekends I've had.

It depends on what you want to major in and what you are looking for in a school and in a college experience. Academically all three are fine schools, but there are differences. Irvine and Davis have medical schools and the opportuntities and emphasis that brings to a campus and SB does not. Davis has a law school and a veterinary school and the other two do not. Davis has a football team and Div. 1 sports and the other two do not.

Santa Barbara is a medium-sized beach town. Irvine is a suburban community and part of the greater LA megacity. Davis is a small, self-contained town - a true college town with something of a crunchy granola vibe. Irvine and SB have better weather than Davis. Davis is closer to the ski slopes. And so on....

They each have pluses and minuses. It just depends on what you are looking for.

definitely UCSB, better academics as Irvine and Davis and a better social life

UCI is not highly ranked

Statistically, it's ranking is equal to SB. Davis, SB & Irvine are all tied for 12th best public Uni.

definitely UCSB, better academics

Not likely (see above).

Couple of other considerations: Davis has more of a college town feel, and D-1 football (ok, 1-AA).

Another UC thread, another post with questionable facts. I'll preface this by saying I'm a UCSB grad.

UCSB, i think it's the most diverse statistically

If you go by USNews diversity index, then UCSB is 3rd between these universities. There's a lot of ways to measure diversity though. As a mirror of California demographics, UCSB is the closest. It has, along with UCSC, the lowest Asian enrollment.

UCI is not highly ranked

Acceptance rates and statistics and enrollment statistics are about equal between UCI, UC Davis, and UCSB.

Santa Barbara is a medium-sized beach town.

Santa Barbara is 12 miles from the UCSB campus That would be analogous to saying that Davis is in Sacramento and then describing Sac. Most students live in Isla Vista, which is a true college town. In fact, Isla Vista has a significantly higher percentage of students in it than Davis (about 15,000 of the 19,000 attend either UCSB or SBCC), and as a result, the town is catered more towards students (Davis doesn't have many 24 hour a day eateries, for example).

UCI is not highly ranked; UCD may be as good as UCSB but I prefer UCSB<<

All three are tied for 44th place among National Universities according to the latest US News ranking.

Interesting responses. Personally, I would pick Santa Barbara (Business/econ major - they're all about the same).

I started this thread to ask YOU for YOUR opinion.

:)

My son has already made a decision to attend UC Davis but we live pretty close to UCSB (1hour 20 minutes). He fell in love with the college town feel and the campus. To be honest UCSB has a reputation of being a "party school" as far as San Luis Obispo. Not to say it does not have great academics, it does but that is just the low down on what people think. My best friends daughter attends their in honors program and she is happy. I loved Davis as well. The safety, the friendliness and the layout were great.

UCSB

more known nationally
coolest campus
great parties

Uh, I believe the OP has decided on Berkeley. ;)

My S had that decision and chose UCSB. He is in the Honors program. He really likes it as a Freshman. It is more residential, and has more college atmosphere than than the others.

UCI because I applied there and I liked being close to Newport

i just visited UCSB a few weeks ago and it is indeed a beautiful campus

I thought UCD was the best amongst those 3 and Irvine was pretty highly ranked but apparently everyone else thinks it’s UCSB. Try for all 3 though! =]

SB is also a notorious party school. Maybe take that into consideration; excessive partying could effectively cancel out the minimally “better” academics they have there.
