UCSB vs UC Irvine

Hi everyone,

I am a prospective economics major trying to decide between UCSB and UC Irvine. Does anyone know anything about the economics program in any of these schools, and in general, how do the schools compare against each other?

Thanks!

UCI definitely has a better engineering program, and AFAIK, is a better school overall.. but the campus is pretty bad.

10 chars.

for econ, they are both good. SB has more of a college-town feel.

Do you plan on any minors? Do you like math?

UCSB has a financial economics (2 years of math required) program that is a few years old that hopes to prepare students for finance careers. They also have a better accounting program. However UCI has a management minor and may have a broader range of classes due to their MBA program (this is an assumption)

UCSB has a really strong business school, is better known outside of CA, and has better campus life.

I say UCSB.

sry, only Cal and UC Riverside have an undergrad biz school. Other UCs might offer biz-econ, and/or accounting minors, etc, but none have a business school "better known outside of CA" bcos they don't have a biz school.

These schools have such different atmospheres and rank so similarly (you'll get the same jobs coming out and grad schools will treat equally) that I would choose by fit. UCSB is a very social party school that has a racial makeup that approaches the general population's. UCI is more of a commuter school and not a party animal place. Half of the students are Asian. Many Asian kids like it to for once be in the majority. It does have a new business school but it will be a long time before it has a national reputation. Choose the one where you will fit.

It might be a valuable experience for a Caucasian to attend UCI, especially if he/she has any interest in pursuing business itnerests internationally. The world is, afterall, majority Asian.

Asia is the huge focus of all F500 business over the past five years, and for the next 30 probably.

If you go by that theory, go to ivies and hang out with the future leaders of Asian business and politics.

I meant to say business program. And UCSB is better known as a whole outside of CA. At least around here.
