I am having a difficult time trying to figure out which one to go to.. any help or advice would be appreciated! and im probably going to be premed

anyone? anything?

are you OOS for both or just one?

UCSB has the better chemistry program if that is your planned major.

Both schools have excellent environmental science majors (my cousin is the chairman of one of the environmental departments at the Univ of Washington up in Seattle). (The school is also known as U-DUB, but I forget why.)

I’d say that if you live in California, go to UCSB, but if you live in Washington, then go to the Univ of Washington.

The weather in Seattle is spectacular in the summer, even more than in Santa Barbara, but it drizzles constantly during most months of the year when school is in session. (The saying in Seattle is “If you can see Mount Rainier, it is about to rain, and if you can’t see Mount Rainier, that is because it is already raining.”) The weather in Santa Barbara is always spectacular.

Seattle will be more of a metropolitan city, with more to do, and it is fun to be right on a lake–but the students at Santa Barbara like having their own “city” out in Goleta right on the fringe of SB, and, of course, they have a beautiful beach right on the edge of campus.

I don’t know which school has the better biology program.

UCSB is the slightly higher-rated program–but costs a lot if you are from out-of-state (OOS).

University of Washington- Seattle

It really depends what kind of experience you want. UCSB is in a small city and kind of in its own bubble. The weather and the campus is BEAUTIFUL. As is Santa Barbara. The cost of living is HIGH. I would imagine higher than Seattle. In fact, I am almost 100% certain it is higher than Seattle. You won’t get the big sports PAC 10 experience at UCSB.

Washington is obviously in a great city and you get that BIG STATE U experience. So again it depends what you are looking for. I don’t think you can go wrong either way.

PERSONALLY, I would opt for Washington because as much as I love Santa Barbara, I would prefer city life. But it would be a TOUGH decision.

i live in california
thanks for all the advice! i think im leaning towards ucsb right now

UCSB is, after all, located in paradise.

Woah, I’m in almost the exact same situation as you wbv745.
I live in California, and it’s between UW & UCSB…
Have you decided where you’re going to go yet for sure?

Make sure you checdk out the tuition increases for the coming year at UW. OOS has already gone up 7% and will continue to do so for the next 4 years. They have not made the decision on how much more they are going to raise OOS tuition yet but it will probably go beyond the 7% as they are about to approve a 14% increase in tuition for in-state kids for the next 2 years (28% total) and then back to 7% after that.
