UCSB Waitlist Discussion Class of 2024

What major did you get off the waitlist for?

Daughter admitted off waitlist on Tuesday.
In state (SoCal); Undeclared
3.7 UW/4.2 W GPA (no idea on capped)
33 ACT
Varsity lacrosse athlete, lots of extracurriculars

She’s turning it down for ASU Barrett Honors (full tuition ride)

I’m a bit split, because I love UCSB, but Barrett is too good to pass up and she’s in the Business school there.

Is it true that they aren’t guaranteeing housing this year for freshmen? If so, is it because they aren’t allowing triples because of COVID, and there are only doubles, so there isn’t enough space?

Accepted off waitlist for Pre-Econ at SB my dream school

3.68 UW
3.96 W

1330 SAT

Rejected from all UCs except riverside (didn’t apply to Merced)

Rejected from SLO and SDSU as well

Waitlisted at SB and SC

Lots of extracurriculars/leadership

Took a risk on essay by talking about my love of cold showers and Rubik’s cubes

Also wrote a letter of continued interest, not sure if it helped me or not

It’s truly, a dream come true

@Anonymousgaucho Congratulation on your dreams coming true!! Amazing choice!

Anyone know when more waitlists/ appeal decisions will come out?

D got off waitlist for UCSB (and other UCS) on 5/5/ and was given till yesterday to accept! She is not going to go there but was going to do nothing! I told her to officially decline yesterday to help you guys on this list! So Atleast there is ONE more spot for one deserving student here!

@TheAtomicSultan so you also got the same unofficial FA award letter before offer of acceptance off of the UCSB waitlist? thx!

Was the only wave so far last tuesday?

@GenJin The unofficial FA award letter doesn’t mean an acceptance or that you’ll get off the waitlist. Every waitlist student received it and it clearly states on the page that it does not mean acceptance. Please don’t make false assumptions about the award letter than everyone receives if they filed a FAFSA.

@KristopherG24 WHAT? All this is on here is ASSUMPTIONS. People in the dark trying to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes
 people speculating
people wondering? People trying to establish patterns if any and meaning.

I never stated that it meant that or that it is their policy. We don’t know what it means and it’s unusual. People had been wondering what-- if any-- meaning there was/is around this being sent out. We are trying to establish if there is a pattern or not. Maybe there is none. Or maybe there is. Again I simply said MAY. AGAIN MAY. Furthermore, many people wrote in wondering about it. It would be nice if others who received this also could confirm if they did or didn’t go further in the acceptance process off the waitlist. If some received but did not or have not, then we can confirm that it is meaningless and something random sent out. If more received and did get off the waitlist eventually, then it MAY mean an indication of something positive to come for others.

@GenJin Well i know something that isn’t an assumption. It states in the email clearly “Please note, waitlisted students receive an Unofficial Award Letter. This notice does not reflect a change in your admission status.” They don’t need to send this message, but it is directed towards people like you who make their own absurd theories and even then you still reject the message.

Also I know this is basically an assumption website, but making assumptions that just refute the facts straight from the admissions office is just being ignorant and unhelpful for other posters.

If believing that an Unofficial FA letter guarantees you a spot for the Class of 2024, so be it. Anything to help keep your spirits up during this pandemic is great. Giving false hope to other posters now setting their sights on UCSB is not right. Be excited for your other options people cause don’t be all disappointed if you don’t get in just cause you know how much you’re getting in your grant.

Anyways, for the people actually accepted, GO GAUCHOS!!!

@GenJin I don’t think that getting the unofficial award letter in your applicant portal means anything, other than, that you were initially accepted or offered a spot on the waitlist.

Just as KristopherG24 wrote, my daughter got this in her UCSB portal as soon as she accepted the waitlist position March 17, or shortly afterward.

She was eventually accepted off of the waitlist (5/5), but I don’t think that this financial aid letter was any indication of her eventual acceptance.

In case accepted students are wondering when the “official” financial aid letters will be sent, I call the Financial Aid Office and they said mid -summer (some time in July).

Best of luck to all those still waiting.

Also just to help your theory, here’s something straight off the actual UCSB website and not from @GenJin

“Each applicant who filled out the federal FAFSA application for student aid and indicated UCSB as a college of choice may view an unofficial financial aid award letter from UCSB. The letter will be available in early April and will provide a preliminary estimate of your eligibility”

Congrats if you received the UNOFFICIAL award letter! You filled out your FAFSA for UCSB!

Thank you @EastBayMom836. Also thanks for the notice for the dates of the OFFICIAL FA Award! Congrats to you and your daughter on UCSB and GO GAUCHOS!!!

Umm
we can all use the internet @KristopherG24 and have also found/ discovered that same page the moment we received the unofficial award. Right? Obviously that is standard legal speak to protect the school for liability. However hopefully if we all compare our experiences we can learn MORE about what it actually really means if anything.

@eastbaymom
Thanks for letting us know your experience! We too had almost identical experience and got that notice/FA award soon after. However what is interesting is that both D’s did eventually get off the waitlist? Just saying

Anyway it doesn’t hurt to speculate. If more people write in, we might be able to determine if there is a connection or if its just generic to all waitlisters!

Again I have nothing to prove here just curious and thought applicants for next year might find it helpful!

wow ok didn’t take ucsb to be liars. great detective work!

once rejections come out for waitlists and we see those people who also had the unofficial FA letter then you’ll see. your time will come.

@KristopherG24 show some compassion to people who remain hopeful. No one has crystal ball, some will get accepted. CSU just announced all state universities will be online, if UC says the same some OOS ppl may start dropping

@norcalparent yea that definitely is a big possibility with the OOS student situation which really is a toss up for most people still waiting. just trying to make sure there is no false hope floating around from the absurd rumor that an unofficial award letter guaranteeing acceptance. this really is just lying to the current people on the waitlist which is just being dishonest (hence me saying to not get your hopes set on ucsb). the real hope is if ucsb does get many OOS to drop or current people getting off the waitlist to drop as well.
