@yyu2002 To be brutally honest, if you got rejected you got rejected so no use in going on your knees and begging for mercy. On the other hand if you got waitlisted, maybe look into some other schools like UCM or UCR which seem to be on the come up!
@31953195Cf Their assumption is that the application numbers may have decreased or what you said on the post. This may not be true as this trend was only seen with UCB, UCLA, and UCSC. Even if thatâs true only a mere 2-3% decrease is expected. (Article online somewhere)
@macal2020 Giving my advice as I saw you got into UCSD, unless youâre daughter is truly set on going to UCSB if accepted, do not go on the waitlist or get off for the sake of students who are banking on the waitlist to go to college. Although you will not get off the waitlist, I just wanted you to know that it makes it more difficult on others.
@HonestTeaMom - You seem to be going out of your way to discourage applicants from waitlisting into UCSB. For many, UCSB is one of their top choices. While being accepted off the list may be slim, I see no reason to discourage those that most likely will attend if given the opportunity. Being waitlisted does not mean an applicant is not a good fit or unqualified. UCSB receives more qualified applicants than they have space.
However, I do agree that applicants should not opt in if they absolutely know they wonât attend as it hurts others.
For those eagerly waiting for a chance to enroll, commit to your best offer by the deadline with the mindset of attending that school. If you are later granted admission to UCSB your acceptance will be that much sweeter. Above all, I wish you all the best of luck!
@gratefulmama: Thank you for calling @HonestTeaMom out. I agree that this poster is trying to discourage waitlisted applicants from opting into the waitlist and rejected students from filing an appeal.
First of all, applicants can accept multiple waitlist spots and any denied applicant has the right to appeal their decision. Chances are not great for either situation but it does not mean these applicants are less competitive. Secondly all schools admit more students than spots available, so even if spots open up on the waitlist, there is no guarantee the schools will utilize their waitlists.
Every applicant should make the best decision for themselves including your student, so have them move onto a school that showed their love.
Please donât listen to @HonestTeaMom it seems like this poster is just trying to discourage appeals for some reason @yyu2002. If you are having problems with your appeal not being sent you should call the admissions office for any questions. I would be prepared to be very patient with the admission office because of all the COVID-19 stuff going on. Iâm another waitlist applicant and GOOD LUCK!
Is anyone else on the waitlist at UCSB receiving their financial aid award details? I just received an email today telling me what my financial aid award is but I am on the waitlist. I am also on the waitlist at Berkeley and have not received financial aid info from there, but maybe itâs because UCSB released their admissions decisions earlier than other UCâs?
My D is on waitlist for UCSB, UCSD. With Covid 19 crisis going on, would it be easier to get off the waitlist now than last few years since less or no people get chance to tour the campus in April therefore decide not to accept the admission especially for those are from out of the state or overseas? Those people might just select the local schools that they are already familiar with. Just a thought.
@WCWSM52 - My D received her FA award details as well. Seems unusual but maybe with covid-19 they are trying to cover all their bases, giving applicants a chance to opt out now if the cost doesnât work.
Interesting and Iâd like to hear if anyone knows whether the UCs generally have different waitlistsâie. is there a waitlist for in-state, out-of-state, and internationalâor is there just one waitlist for all. I think without a question, fewer international students will accept offers to schools in the U.S. But if the UCs just offer spots to international waitlists, I doubt there will be much of an impact.
@WCWSM52 I am waitlisted @ UCSB, but my FA showed up the same day I was waitlisted
@Lasttime2020 and @WCWSM52 Every applicant who was either waitlisted or admitted received an estimated financial aid estimate. It clearly states that it is not a notification of admission. Itâs most likely there to allow waitlisted/admitted students to gauge their cost with other schools and ultimately decide if they want to attend/stay on the waitlist. Sorry if that crushed some false hope.
@KristopherG24 and @WCWSM52 itâs not true for all UCâs, Iâm also waitlisted @ UCI & UCSD but no FA estimate, soâŠ
@Lasttime2020 Same here. Doesnât really mean anything. Itâs just means that UCSB is on top of their stuff. Also idk what you are implying from the FA estimate as if getting an estimate increases your chances somehow ???.
I also do wish that it was some indicator that my chances are higher than others but itâs just not the case. We should still be prepared to get excited over our second choices though because a waitlist is still a very slim chance of acceptance. Please do not attach acceptance probability to a FA estimate because everyone received a FA.
â Please note, waitlisted students receive an Unofficial Award Letter. This notice does not reflect a change in your admission status. Your UAL is meant to provide you with relevant financial aid information should your admission status change. The Office of Admissions will notify you by email if there has been a change in their admission status.â - UCSB Financial Aid and Scholarships (sorry for spamming just have to let everyone know the truth).
I just thinking more spots available for overall waitlist candidate since many admitted wonât enroll due to the virus. International student might just wait for next year and out-of-state just reject by May 1 even though they were admitted. Cancellation of April campus tours will just stop many admitted ones. My D got waitlisted on UCSB, UCSD and UCI, but admitted to UC Davis. She gets one year transfer offer from USC. We are in SouCal and like to just stay local.
@Endotron That really is the perfect situation for us waitlisted students, but you never know what can happen I guess. Iâm interested to see how things turn out and if the UCâs will reveal if there was a lower or higher SIR rate than usual for this coming fall quarter.
My DD was WLâed at two other UCs and I had heard from multiple reliable sources that schools will take more off the WLâs because of the issues mentioned in this thread(international students, lack of on-site tours, etc.). Last year one UC lost 500 students that SIRâed because they were taken off the waitlist from other UCâs. This impacts operating budgets, etc. so if you are on a WL from your chosen school, be patient, your chances should be really good - it just stinks to have to wait. California also has the Promise Program which gives free tuition to all graduating seniors for their first year of Community College. Our family was planning on doing this until we realized our DD wouldnât be able to get the classes she needs for an AST at our local CC and she has finished most of her required GE towards her degree.
I submitted an appeal and noticed this morning that the appeal tab on my portal has disappeared. Is this the case for anyone else?
