UC Forum Champion Note:

This is a STATS ONLY thread and I have deleted some posts that should be posted on the discussion thread: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-santa-cruz/2173251-ucsc-class-of-2024-discussion-thread.html

My daughter received acceptance email today, in-state:
UC GPA 4.22
Unweighted 4.0
SAT 1210

EC’s: athlete, back-to-back state volleyball champion, Junior Olympics gold medalist, team captain, former student body president, 500+ service hrs with youth, small business owner, FAA licensee, member of the Pokagon Band of Potowatomi, private STEM scholarship recipient for excellence

Weaknesses: SAT score low, GPA average for the overall UC system (in the other comments section of the application, my daughter addressed her disappointment regarding her own SAT score, and her thoughts regarding standardized testing in general)

Strengths: essay & ECs both VERY good (hs counselor commented her insight responses were the best she’s ever read), STEM class performance

Words of advice from our own experience: my D researched in-depth the UC 14 criteria and where she demonstrated the specific criteria, she called it out in her app

Decision: Admitted

State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant):
High school type: Public

Gender: Male

Applied for need-based financial aid?: No

Highest level of parent education: PhD
Living with both, one, or no parents?: both

Reflection

Strengths: SAT, essays, HUGE upward grade trend (9th grade gpa was 2.9)
Weaknesses: my gpa is lower compared to many at my school because i got a late start with my late diagnosis of ADD
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I put a lot of passion into my essays and really talked in my own voice and wasn’t acting fake
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: SDSU is my only acceptance so far, waiting on all other UCs and Cal Poly SLO

Decision: Admitted

Merit scholarships awarded (if any): Not that I saw.

Major (and division if applicable) applied to: Literature

Academic stats:

UC Unweighted GPA: 3.95
UC Capped Weighted GPA: 4.29
ELC (top 9%): Yes

Comments about course load (including senior year): Took no APs/Honors sophomore year, bad grades freshman year (B’s and C’s, one A). Heavy course load junior and senior year (for my rural school with not many AP classes), 3 AP’s and one Honors class Jr. year, 4 AP’s senior year.

SAT (total and sections): 1340 (only took once) - 590 M, 750 EBRW
ACT (total and sections): N/A
SAT Subject Tests (if any): N/A
AP exams (scores in parentheses): Lang and Comp (5), APUSH (5), APES (5)

Subjective:

For the following, indicate level of recognition or award (e.g. local, state, national, international) and/or leadership roles:
Extracurriculars: Interact, German Honors Society, NHS, very involved in peer tutoring program for 3 years, leadership position in Teen Court for 3 years, organized multiple school and community wide assemblies/protests (if that counts)
Job/Work Experience: Employed at McDonald’s all of Jr. year
Volunteer/Community service: 300+ hours between Interact, NHS, Teen Court, and the food bank
Summer Activities: Camp counselor for 2 summers

Personal Insight essays (details): I wrote about the traumatic event freshman year that caused my grades to drop and how I bounced back from it, my work in leading student protest for fair teacher wages, pursuing passion over practicality and my love for English, and how expression through creative writing has helped me grow personally and academically.

Letters of recommendation/Augmented Review: N/A, but did receive augmented review for reach schools (UCLA and UCSD)

Demographics

State (if domestic applicant): California
High school type: Rural

Gender: Female

Applied for need-based financial aid?: Yes (EFC is 0)

Highest level of parent education: Bachelor’s Degree
Living with both, one, or no parents?: One

Reflection

Strengths: Major upward grade trend (from 2.85 9th grade to 4.6 11th), PIQ’s, English section score on SAT, AP scores, community service involvement, UC GPA
Weaknesses: 9th grade grades, course rigor in 10th grade, math section SAT score
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think that my application presented a well-rounded amount of insight into who I am as an applicant, triumphs and struggles alike. Made sure to highlight my passions in relation to my major in my PIQ’s, and use them to try to paint a broader picture about anything in my app that may look like a red flag to admissions officers. My stats are fairly on par for SC, but I think the essay pushed me over the edge to acceptance!
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted HSU, CSU Monterey, SJSU, CSULB. Waiting on other UC’s, but most likely am committing to SC.

Courseload was fairly tedious for my school, but not too crazy. I did get straight A’s junior year though which is not too common considering I took some of the harder classes at my school like AP Chem and APUSH

Personal insight essay topics:

  • My internship and why I liked CS, wrote about my dad cause he does CS
  • Developed greatest skill wrote about leadership and how as marching band section leader it was a skill I gained over time rather than being an instant thing. Tried to show personal growth
  • making community a better place wrote about eagle scout project where I made hygiene kits for the homeless
  • hardest challenge I wrote about how I had a friend who was getting into drugs so I was pulled in two directions but decided to overcome that and leave him as a friend. This was also why I got some B’s freshman year

Reflection

Strengths: GPA/ACT
Weaknesses: My extracurriculars are kinda too well rounded I think, stopped me from being as CS focused as some kids are. Also got some B’s freshman year but 4.0 since then so it might show growth but they were still B’s.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Probably GPA/ACT
