My DD is finally excited about attending UCSC and her friends and some other family friends talked to her about the drug and pot problem on campus. We are concerned as we read some articles that you can actually smell marijuana on certain colleges campus or pathways. My DD doesn’t like cigarettes smell and was concerned. We will definitely pay some attention during our visit but would appreciate if anyone from UCSC can share how’s the environment (can you smell or spot pot usage regularly)?
Yes. People smoke in the dorms, Porter Meadow or behind C9/10. It’s a pretty big weed community, but also very open-minded, and your daughter won’t be judged if she doesn’t want to partake.
Thanks @JulianL45 ! With marijuana now being legalized, not sure if it will spread beyond Porter Meadow or C9/10 area. We were thinking about Crown College now, but she also needs to consider others colleges in case if no availability.
It’s in all the colleges, but definitely less prevalent in crown/merril. However, in every college there are people who smoke and people who don’t, and everyone understands and is ok with that.
My son lives in Crown. Crown has a nickman of “nerdy college”. Crown and Merrill are the “twins” and shared certain resources. Merrill is called the “sterile college”. So, less of pot issues. He stayed at Porter before during summer and his room mates smoked 6 times a day in the dorm by the window - son survived with his electric fan!
