Overview of UC Santa Cruz’s Selection Process

UC Santa Cruz received over 10,000 transfer applications for fall 2017. The transfer enrollment target for fall quarter is 1,250 students, approximately 100 more than enrolled for fall 2016. UC Santa Cruz remains selective in its transfer admissions process.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Admissions Process (as of 3/17/17)

How many transfer applications did you receive this year?

10,006, a slight increase from fall 2016.

How many junior transfers did you offer admission to this year?

To date, we have admitted 1,075 students in the hope of enrolling a class of 1,250 students. The number of admitted students as of today’s date represents less than 20% of what our campus hopes to admit.

How many transfers did you deny admission to this year?

To date, 544 students have been denied.

Did you accept any lower-division transfer students?

No, UC Santa Cruz did not accept applications from lower-division transfer students for fall 2017. The priority for our campus remains junior-level transfer students.

Did you accept any second baccalaureate students?

No, UC Santa Cruz did not accept applications from second baccalaureate students for fall 2017.

How did you make your admissions decisions?

We employed faculty-approved selection criteria of the junior-transfer applicants. Students coming from the California community colleges remain our top priority in selecting transfer students for admission. Refer to our Transfer Admission and Selection Guide for more information.

When did you send your decisions out?

We began notifying transfer students today, March 17, and we will continue to notify through April 30.

Have you finished your selection process?

No, we continue to review transfer applications. We will complete our selection of transfer students by the end of April.

What was the average GPA of your admits?

Our mean GPA for all junior-level transfer students admitted through 3/17/2017 was 3.39. Overall GPA is an important factor in our selection, and in some majors, a GPA in specific courses required for the major is equally important.

Is choice of major one of your criteria for admission/selection?

Yes, as transfer students should have completed as much of the lower-division requirements as possible for their intended majors. This is especially important for students proposing a major that is listed on the following web site: http://admissions.ucsc.edu/apply/transfer-students/major-prep.html.

I want to change the major that I listed on my application. Is that possible?

Since junior-level students are expected to have completed most (if not all) of the lower-division coursework required for their major, a change of major may not be appropriate. In cases where a student has met the selection criteria for another major, then that request may be considered.

Did you admit all UC-eligible junior transfers?

To date we have only admitted UC-eligible transfer students with a minimum 2.7 GPA who met our campus selection criteria. As a selective campus, UCSC may not be able to admit all UC-eligible junior transfers. See the Transfer Selection Criteria above for more details.

Did you take fall term grades into account?

Provided a student submitted their fall 2016 grades on the Transfer Academic Update by February 15, the fall grades were taken into consideration for our admission decision. For those applications still under consideration, fall 2016 grades are taken into account.

Did you give any preference for local students?

No. We held all transfers to the same standards for admission, regardless of geographic location. Students transferring from the California community colleges remain the highest priority in our selection process.

How were you able to let some students know their decision before other students?

Students who had approved UCSC TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee) agreements were admitted on March 17, as well as many other transfers who appeared highly qualified and were transferring directly from a California community college.

In looking at posts from last year, I noticed that decisions still came out after the May 1 deadline to submit SIR forms. That is cruel.

@lmcc13tr Transfers have until June 1 to SIR. May 1 is for Freshman.

June 1st is the SIR date

@Nataliee177 thanks for the info.

@calmom17 thanks for conveniently putting all that great info up.

Does anyone else think that all of this part is KIND OF FISHY? They’ve admitted 1075/1250 and somehow that comes out to <20%???

Admitted does not equal enrolling. They say they will admit 1075x5 and out of that group only 1250 will enroll. So roughly 25% enroll rate

@Shytstorm i think thata the amount of people they are trying to enroll. They admitted over 4.5K people last year but not many enrolled

oh man thanks @loyalfan49 and @enpz45 good catch. Lol.

I was scheduled for the 3am slot as well but have not heard back. I would assume part of this delay is due to them releasing all of the freshman decisions on the 15th(from emails freshman have posted on twitter), when it was suppose to be done from the 15-31st - causing a delay on our end. But the last part of my sentence is just speculation.

This reddit thread might also be helpful for those of us still waiting.

That’s “reddit” where C. Confidential blocked out with asterisks. Obviously a newbie on this site hah.

@astrophilia what makes you think they’re now longer reviewing applications?

Oh, no! Have no idea why I typed that, I guess being hopeful! Haha. I meant “still reviewing applications.”

Anyone a film major who’s heard back?
