UCSC or UCR?

I have lived in the Bay Area all my life so Santa Cruz would be a lot closer to home. I know that UCSC is supposed to be ranked higher than UCR, but I’ve heard a lot from people telling me that UCR is the better place to go, which makes me very confused on what to do. Also, one of the teachers who I am most close to and knows me well tells me that she couldn’t see me at UCSC. My first choice was UCI but I got rejected.

I’ve read on here that UCR is a commuter school while UCSC allows you to meet people from different parts of CA, is this true?

I have also heard around that both UCSC and UCR are party schools, which I do not mind, but right now I am concerned at which will be a better school education wise. My major for both schools is Biology, and I have heard that Riverside is the better choice for that. On the other hand, UCSC has a Health Sciences B.S. degree program especially designed for students interested in the medical field.

Which campus is nicer and has nicer buildings/housing? I have heard that Santa Cruz is a nice campus in that it is in the middle of a forest on a hill. Is this true? I have not visited either campus, but UCR seems to possibly have more to offer students living on campus with its dorms and amenities that they offer according to the housing information they sent me. Also, people have told me that UCSC is kind of far from any social life aside from the Beach Board walk, which is supposedly nothing that special. And I would not necessarily classify myself as being a nature lover; I don’t know whether I would want to live in that scence for 4 years. I know UCR is within distance of Hollywood and other Socal attractions. Which would be an easier transition for me, coming from a suburban community (Fremont) and being someone who is also considering SF State?

You would still have to drive pretty far to get to hollywood from riverside.
I’ve been to Riverside, not UCR, but riverside is nothing but a bunch of houses.

For Premed UCR has a wayyyyyyy better pre med program and is more a science based campus than UCSC which is humanities. Plus UCSC and UCR tend to switch position for the 7th place campus for the same reason. Riverside city is a suburban city but they ae lots of club and raves in San Bernandino 20 mins north and Morongo Casino 30 mins east

I agree with Jason. If you want to go into the medical field, UCR def beats UCSC. UCR has a very good science-orientated curriculum. They are opening up a medical school in 2012. They have a very special program with UCLA med school.

I would totally go to UCR, but…I just cannot function academically when it’s hot.

So does the UCR premed still beat out on UCSC’s Health Sciences Program? Which is esp. for students wanting to go into the medical field?

and does it really get that hot in riverside?

Oh nice bay area :D. I happen to know where Fremont is (very asian city XD) :). I visited both campuses before and I definitely would choose UCSC over UCR. Based on my experience, I know people who attend UCR and say that alot of people complaining about winding up in UCR(which honestly I don’t know why they bother going there if they’re gonna complain about ending up there)

UCSC to me is much more better looking campus(more prestigious also), and if you’re asian and happen to go to Mission. I’d recommend you go to UCSC, because it’s much more diverse population(race-wise) compared to the many UC. Keep in mind where you go for undergrad doesn’t matter much unless you’re doing engineering or medical(yes I’m aware you want to do medical) However most people in college decide to change major :). So I’d recommend researching all the majors you’re interested in and then choose your choice :D

Yes, the winter months aren’t that bad, it’s actually quite chilly. But once it’s late spring to fall, it gets above 90 at least.

it s not that hot in riverside its just a humid hot. I know I come here. Yes UCSC has better overall prestige UCR Science is far more prestige than UCSC. LOL at UCSC being very diverse. UCR is the most diverse university in CAL.

in terms of race wise it is so not diverse. It’s like 45% Asian -.- which is like all the other UCs except for UCSB and UCSC <.<.

but there are alot of hispanics and white…oh a sri lankans plenty of them

about the same ratio with the other UCs also <.<.

actually no haha

o…k? If you want to make UCR look that good, fine by me (since you go there) <.<. I’m just going by the statistic tables lol.

haha its good there are lots of asians but UCR is the school were you have friends from every part of the globe…though I dont have any black friends there as of now haha

riverside is hot as hell in the summer it’s far from LA and there are a lot of commuters. I would go to UCSC because it seems like my type of place but obviously you have to see for yourself.

dude rside is not far from LA it 45 mins away. You ll survuved the heat its just for the first to weeks and the last few weeks of school
The campus is super green to. Yeah they are commuters but their are also a good amount of norcal ppl

It does get pretty hot. And it is around an hour away from LA two hours in traffic.
It depends on if area matters to you because I’ve seen Riverside and the area seems really boring and not that great. Santa Cruz seems much nicer.

well no crap it takes two hours to get from sfv to la and its 20 miles away it so call
