Hey everyone, I know applications hasn’t started yet but anyone else already planning for this?
I might be applying just for a chance at a research program
@iloveanime123 which categories have you picked?
I attended the program last year. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask 'em!
What did you guys write about in your essays? I’m a bit lost…
@aswiml hello, do you know how selective/how many people apply each year? I can’t seem to find any info about it. Also how was your experience last year?
@tofudeer Hi! They mentioned it last year but i don’t really remember, sorry :(. I think the acceptance rate was around 15-20%. I had an awesome experience last year. It was cool to be able to get a glimpse into the workings of a research lab. Personally in my lab we didn’t create our own research project. Rather, we were in charge of running a pilot study (I was in psych). Overall, there were a lot of amazing, unique people that made the summer fun. I’d say the only possible downside was the 45min-hr ride there and back every day, but we got used to it and it wasn’t too bad. PM/let me know if you have anymore questions!
@aswiml is it mandatory that we attend all the 8 weeks or we have an option to attend 6-7 weeks??
@AV2020 honestly, I think it all depends on your mentor. Personally, I didn’t have many conflicting things, so I attended about 8-9ish weeks. But, I have friends who did another week-long program in the middle of SIP. Application wise, I’d put the minimum amount they want you to have and then talk to your mentor if you get in. Chances are (depending on the mentor!), they may be willing to let you skip an extra week.
@aswiml Yeah, I was wondering what the day to day schedule and social interactions are like. Thanks for the insight!
@tofudeer Again, depending on the lab this may vary. But our general schedule was similar to: 9am-12/1pm research in lab, 12-1pm (hour for lunch), 1-4pm work in lab. Personally in my department, we had weekly presentations or meetings that happened oftentimes in the afternoon. Also, there were a series of lectures on a variety of topics from different ucsc faculty at some point in the summer. Honestly, it varies a lot on what you have to do in terms of research. Hope that helped!
@aswiml yup thanks for the info!
very kind of you to share your experience with the SIP program. This is what enriches this forum. Thank you and best of luck for your future endeavors. Mind sharing what you are planning this summer?
What are the chances of a freshman getting into SIP?
Does anyone know what they expect in the essays and when will the results be out ? Also, applying for Psych @aswiml, the projects/studies in Psych do they help with the Science Fair ?
@arpijoy I can’t say for sure what they expect in essays but at it’s core I expect it’s similar to what many other programs or even colleges (treat these type of essays as practice for your college essays) would like to see: who you are, what drives/excites you, what you can bring to a research lab, etc… I believe results come out this Friday.
As for whether you can use your project in a science fair like synopsys, that depends entirely on the project you do, how much you accomplish with the proj, and your PI. Some labs don’t allow you to enter the study in science fairs because they would like to keep what they’re currently doing private.
@Princeton22333 I’m not quite sure about that, but I know that there were one or two last year (i think from harker).
@veeyes hi! no problem at all :’)
I’m actually planning on either going to SIP again but in a different subject area or interning in a local university lab along with some other things. Really, just trying to learn more about myself, my flaws/faults/values, and pursue life not under the guise of doing stuff just to get into college (I find that people are often pursuing their interests…but tailored to college admissions!)
What are the chances of a freshman getting into SIP?
Hi, junior checking in. Does anyone know what time the decisions come out tomorrow (4/5)?
