Be aware that the UC’s are taking an additional 5000 students next year of which UCSC has committed to 650. In my opinion they do not have the infrastructure to handle this many students and a faculty friend of ours said it is wrong of the school to take these additional students. My student is an OOS (Out of stater) so we are paying private school rates to attend and feel it is not worth it in light of the school taking all these students. Housing has always been an issue and now it’s even more so. Housing is only guarantted for 1st and 2nd years and it is difficult to get off-campus housing. I’ve heard they are now telling students only 1st year is guaranteed, but I’m not sure if that is accurate. Do your research and make sure your needs are going to be met. Our student is stongly considering transferring out. Again as an OOS our expectations are probably higher since we are paying so much to attend.
@MassAnonymous: All UC’s only guarantee 2 years on-campus housing regardless if they are increasing the number of admitted students this year. None of the California publics guarantee 4 years housing so yes that should be a consideration especially if you are paying a premium. I agree all students making a decision in-state or OOS need to do some thorough research before making a college decision.
@Gumbymom does mean that those on the waitlist have a chance? Or is this irrelevant
That is exciting, is it a confirmed news to add 5000 UC students, for which year 2016 or 2017?
Waitlisted applicants only have a good chance if fewer than expected admitted students do not SIR. There is no way to predict until after May 1 but hopefully this will improve the waitlist chances but no guarantees. The additional 5000 UC students include Freshman and Transfers and was agreed upon by the Governor and the UC Chancellor for this Fall 2016.
