Hi,

I am a freshman in UCSC and I am slowly getting tired of the school. It has no clubs or extra circular activities that interest me and it feels like I really do not fit into the school. It feels like all the people attending the school have a different mindset or different style of living than me. I really don't think I fit in and I am really really interested in transferring out of the school.

I am a freshman, and therefor only taken 15 units of classes here at school. I would want to transfer out as soon as possible but do I have to wait the two years until 90 units are fulfilled? I am a proposed electrical engineering student and I am planning to remain in the same major. My winter grades were two B's and one A.

What is my next steps. I feel lost since it feels like I have to either wait to fulfill all 90 units or is it possible to transfer before those are fulfilled? And what are my next steps. What do I need to do?

Thank you so much for your help

Is UCSC really that bad? I applied there for fall 2010. I have seen many messages on this board showing similar dissatisfaction with the school.

yeah I really don’t like the school. I mean if you get into a better school, choose that one I think.

If you really want to transfer out, then the best thing you can do is go to a community college now. You will save money and you will have a better chance when applying. If you don’t want to leave for a CC, I do know you can apply to USC right now, but they will mostly weigh your hs stats when applying. Also keep in mind you need to complete your major’s pre reqs for each of these schools.

But really, no clubs or EC’s that interest you? I’m currently a UCSC student and I find that REALLY hard to understand. Have you gone to the OPERS festival? I’ve seen SO many freshman students who want to get out of ucsc because they don’t give the school a chance. Then soph year comes around and nearly all of them change their mind (given they relinquish that ‘sc prejudice’ they had earlier).

I REALLY wanted to leave freshman year (got in to davis, irvine, SD out of hs), but I stuck it out and I’m really liking the place this year. Even though I applied to a few colleges this year, I think I’m going to stick with SC (except if I get in UCB/UCLA).

My hint of advice: Just give it some time. Some people here might seem really different or have that “strange mindset,” but you aren’t surrounded. Give the place a chance, try to get involved, just get out there and have a great time. Thinking that UCSC is “the only school that has problems” will leave you with unrealistic expectations. Basically, UCSC is only a problem when you begin to believe it’s a problem.

Yeah I am in full agreement with MidnightGolfer. I am a sophomore at UCSC and there are more than enough (literally) clubs in my major that I have time for. When I was a freshmen, I did not really look to join anything so I thought there were no clubs for me. This led me to have a less than desirable freshman year because I felt like there were few like me at Santa Cruz. My sophomore year I actually asked around and went to the club fair and all of a sudden there were 5-6 opportunities for me. I am 300% happier my sophomore year than my freshman year because of this involvement in extracurricular activities.

I too am applying to several UCs and most likely will take off if I get in somewhere, but I can definitely see myself graduating from UCSC. The plus side of staying at Santa Cruz is the big fish in a small pond situation. I would be graduating in at least the top 10% of my class, have strong professor recommendations, have leadership roles in more than one club, and will have good job prospects. In conclusion, it’s not that bad.

If you don’t think you are going to get over your dislike for the school, definitely go to community college. No reason to be unhappy for two years and pay a lot more. It will be hard to transfer from UCSC as an Engineer anyways because you are going to need a B+/A- average if you want a shot.
