Hi,

I am a sophomore at Loyola Marymount Univ. in Los Angeles. I applied to transfer to UCSC for the fall term. My college gpa is 3.4, I have leadership in student organizations, many extra-curricular?s, and I am a California resident. I just checked my portal and it said that I was denied admission. Does this seem odd to any of you? I thought that my stats were a perfect match for UCSC. Should I appeal the decision?

Thanks for your opinions!!

I'm really not sure the priority you get coming from another 4 year institution and one thats not a UC or CSU, but your GPA does seem like a match for UCSC. DId you have the pre-reqs finished if they transfered over? I would appeal if you had most of your pre reqs, and if you didn't but still wanted to transfer just do it anyway.

The appeal is simply a letter to them reading from what people have said on the forums.

Unless you have committed a felony or were applying as an Engineering major, it is very odd that you were rejected. Maybe they made a mistake. I would call their office of admissions. It says on their website that you need a minimum GPA of a 2.4 for California residents. You are a California resident, right? I know quite a few people who transferred to UCSC with a GPA below a 3.0.

The only other thing I can think of is that you did not complete all of the required classes.
Do you have (copied right from their website)..
Complete the following course pattern requirements, earning a grade of C or better in each course:
• Two UC-transferable college courses (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units each) in English composition; and
• One UC-transferable college course (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units) in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning; and
• Four UC-transferable college courses (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units each) chosen from at least two of the following subject areas: the arts and humanities, the social and behavioral sciences, and the physical and biological sciences.

I completed all the required classes and I am a California resident. I'm going to be giving them a call first thing in the morning....this is just all too weird.

Sorry to hear that ctorres9. But from what I've been asking around and hearing from people (and from this site) is that to transfer from a UC, usually the CC and other UC transfers have first priority. Then the CSU's. Then other colleges. And to think realistically, the CC's and CSU's in the Bay Area (where I'm at right now) are pretty overcrowded, full of people who are trying to transfer over, just wanting to go to any UC that accepts them. Plus, your major may be a problem as well. But good luck to you. There is a good chance that if you appeal, they'll accept you.
