UCSD Alum Taking Q's

Answering Questions for Ihatehighschool and Bay Area 510.

I’m a current ERC freshman and I have a triple and have no problems with it. I suppose a double would be more convenient, but if you enjoy the prospect of saving nearly a 1000 dollars per year (if I remember correctly), pick a triple. I rarely spent time in my room anyways besides sleeping, but thats just my experience. Then again, ERC is known for having the best dorms on campus so I can’t really speak to the other colleges…

Sixth college has its pros and cons, but I don’t find its one of the more popular colleges on campus. Its extremely isolated (practically in a forest) and exceptionally far from many places on campus, especially ERC which is why I’m rarely over there. The dorms are average(they resemble cottages)- not as good as ERC or Marshall or Warren, better than Revelle, and I’ve never been inside the Muir dorms so I can’t speak for them. I have heard its the smallest college so supposedly they have the tighest knit community of all the colleges. Sixth is filled with science and engineering majors, typical I suppose of most of the UCSD colleges with the exception of ERC and possibly Muir. The Cafetaria (Foodworx) is small, out of the way, and supposedly has no indoor seating, but I’ve heard the food itself is good, and the pizzas are supposed to be the best on campus.

Kelly -

If you son is a bio major (or something similar), I think choosing UCSD over Berkeley is a perfectly reasonable decision. I don’t have any empirical evidence, but I’m of the mindset that you perform better wherever you are happiest. I’d be very surprised if this were untrue. The quality of research opportunities in science will be as strong at UCSD as they are at Berkeley. Most major UCSD labs are funded by NIH grants and there are many, many UCSD profs who are members of the National Academy of Sciences. If access to research positions are more readily available at UCSD, as my friend above suggested, then research weighs in UCSD’s favor. Any difference in the reputation of the programs (which in premed or science programs I would expect to be fairly negligible) will be significantly overshadowed by GPA, research, MCAT/GRE’s, and other resume boosters for med/grad school admissions.

Kelly - this is in no way a response to your post, but I wanted to address something I’ve seen a little of this on the board. I would caution people against assuming that the slight differences in student body quality amongst the UC’s translates into automatic differences in what your college GPA will be. I think choosing UCSD over Berkeley or UCI over UCSD because you expect to get a better GPA is presumptuous (and perhaps bordering on arrogant). Many (most?) students underperform in high school and no two high schools are exactly alike. You’ll find that good students in high school will have poor GPA’s in college and high school slackers will wake up and graduate magna cum laude. Also - especially in something like Premed, high SAT scores don’t necessarily translate into college success; diligence is equally if not more important. Walking in with a 2250 doesn’t mean you’ll walk out with a 3.8+.

that’s a very good post UCSD ALUM

Thanks a lot, UCSD Alum. I bought 4 Southwest tickets to attend 4/12 UCSD Admit Day. My son is one of few commended students from his big high school. His goal is to be a doctor. Though Berkeley is very close to my home, I will respect his decision and set a very high value upon your opinions. Millions of thanks!

thanks ohnod2002. thats pretty insightful..the whole isolated forest thing kinda turns me off to sixth. ill have to go to admit day to check it out for myself tho

ya thx for the dorm information ohno.

Hi UCSD and i_lose,

I booked my kids’ housing long time ago. I am sure he can get single. Should I buy TV and fridge for him? Any cable in the room?

The “Living on Campus” brochure lists “Premium Cable TV with two HBO channels, MTV, and much more” so yes to the Cable. You might want to consider getting a tuner for his laptop so he can just watch TV on his laptop. That’s what I’m probably doing. No clue about the fridge but I remember they sold mini-fridges four years ago at Cal when my brother was moving in.

hey can someone explain how the revelle dorms are? I was wondering if guys and girls are mixed for a suite and how the shared bathrooms works. What should I do to make sure I get a double, i dont want a single or triple. Thx!

Hey to any UCSD almuni/current students of UCSD,

I just commited to UCSD and I am pretty amazed with its research opportunities and prestigiousness in sciences. I was admitted under the major: Mathematics w/ applied Sciences.
I dont know exactly what this major is about however, I really want to try and get into the medical field, hoping to pursue Medicine and become a Doctor. I know it requires alot of work and class requirements of Advanced Physics, advanced Chemistry, and Advanced Biology but I took all three of those AP classes (Physics B AP AND Physics C AP (applied calculus one)). So I really think I am up for it.

I just wanted to know what may help by any means necessary to get into this field of study and get into a great medical school. I really want to do research as well since I am reading that research at UCSD is accessible and great to get into. Any tips? Thanks!

kelly94555:
i booked ucsd admit day too but i didn’t get any receipt or confirmation page. all it said is that “you have successfully reserved a spot” or something like that. is that all we r supposed to get? we don’t need to print out confirmation page or any receipt right??

thanks

For admit day, no confirmation. Don’t worry. My friend told me “Wear comfortable shoes and bring water” on admit day.

Only when I booked Warren housing, it gave me on-line confirmation. In mid-May, UCSD will send you housing contract process email. You need to activate it.

kelly94555:
thanks for the reply!! :D

UCSD alum, is there EOP program at UCSD? I’ve tried searching around their website and couldn’t find anything about it. I found that UCSB and UC davis have EOP programs.

hey UCSD alum, I have to ask the question that is going to be asked.
Triton eye? How are the girls?

and is management science any good?

thanks alot UCSDalum, you are really helping the process.

Thanks a lot! MiqueMaus

I was told by my friend that UCSD Bio is very tough. 300 in and only 50 survive. (It’s all mom’s talk. I want to hear from UCSD Bio students.) Is this true? Lots of tests?

Kelly94555,

I don’t know the actual number of people who actually graduate with a bio major but it is very competitive. Science classes at UCSD in general are demanding, with usually two midterms and a final. For some students, the biggest challenge with being a bio major is getting into the specific labs they want/need to graduate. There’s a lot of people majoring in bio and only so many lab spaces. Some students have to finish their last labs the summer after they were supposed to graduate.

UCSD Alum, if you don’t mind me asking, what law school did you get into and what was your GPA/LSAT scores? I just got into UCSD (transfer student) and am majoring in Poli Sci but looking to go to a top 14 law school. I was wondering, what kind of GPA are they looking for from an institution like UCSD?

UCSD Alum,

How long does it take for most people to get a Masters in bioengineering? I hear there is also a five-year masters program at UCSD - how does that exactly work? Do you know anyone doing it/wanting to do it and how are they fairing?

Thetrumpet070, I suggest you check out LawSchoolNumbers.com. I’m an incoming freshman and also looking at getting into a T14. According to a Boalt pdf from a couple years back, their law school scaled UCSD and Cal as having the same “harshness factor” for lack of a better term. I am not sure about schools lower down on the T14 list but 170+ LSAT and 3.85+ GPA will safely get you in. Like I said, check out the website because it has stats from the past couple of years with factors such as URM, reported income, etc. to help you gauge your own chances. Good luck.

Edit: If you want to check stats from those from UCSD who have posted their numbers on the site. Go to “Search User” and then put down “San Diego” in the Location box. Keep in mind this will include students who attend SDSU and people who are applying who are not Undergraduate students. As I said, your GPA and SAT will matter far more than your attending UCSD as it is considered a pretty good university.
