UCSD an easy decision?

I’m having a really hard time deciding between Regents Scholar at UCSD or Berkeley. I’m studying bio btw. How did you guys decide on UCSD or was it an easy decision to begin with?

i'm actually battling the same decision- for biochem at ucsd. I visited ucsd and pretty much i'm relying on calday to help me decide!!

whoa really? it's weird but it seems like few ppl would choose sd over cal? i'm really concerned about the competitiveness at cal and i think the only reason i'd choose cal is because of reputation. i dunno if thats a good enough reason though

UCSD's reputation in bio is just as big if not bigger than cal

lindzeeo: I agree with squarehead. Besides, if you are a Regent's scholar at UCSD, you will get priority in registration and guaranteed housing for all four years, I believe. Of course, the money, too. But the priority in registration is a BIG thing.

UCSD is way cooler than Cal, especially for you...and yeah, it was a VERY easy decision for me to choose UCSD, no question whatsoever.

thanks guys! i'm really excited and i'm like 85% sure now=D

My kid went to UCSD 6 yrs ago and he was happy there. Now he is going to Berkeley for his grad work. Good luck.

I'm currently trying to decide between UCSD and UPenn (for bioengineering). I really like UCSD, but I'm afraid that the fact that it's not as prestigious as Penn will harm me for the future, since I want to go to medical school. Does anyone know if med schools weigh their decisions heavily on undergrad schools, and if so, is UCSD a well-recognized school in the medical school admissions process?

yeah i'd like to know to, though i'm not yet sure about med school

Med school admission is based on numbers. The school you went to, major, and everything else isn't taken into account. Having said that, I wouldn't advise anyone to go to an easier school to increase your chances of getting into med school. You could change your mind about med school.

As for UPenn versus UCSD, did you get into bioengineering for both? Bioengineering is ranked 3rd in the country for UCSD. Check how research and internship opportunities different at Penn and at UCSD. Also, obviously, visit the campuses. I wouldn't worry too much about how prestigious the school is. Both UCSD and Penn have high rankings. And if you're planning on either med school or grad school, then where you did your undergrad isn't that important. It's more important to employers that you're experienced (which you can get through internships, research, and volunteering) and that you're good at what you do.

COLLEGE!,

Don't worry too much about rankings, but do keep something in mind: You are fairly likely to change career goals in the next 3 or 4 years. Make sure you aren't choosing undergrad (where people are prone to "self discovery") for just a major. Choose an undergrad holistically, and take into account all the factors.

But, remember a few things:

Kick butt wherever you go (as long as it's not Podunk U.) and you'll be just fine.

I'll be TAing at UCSD

Penn, according to my alumni friend, is really cold. But there are really great places for (buffalo) wings.

UCSD has better beaches, hands down.

I am desperately hoping for a spot off a Waitlist for a private school back east but in the meantime I think I'm committing to Revelle....

Another thing to consider is that UCSD stresses research and internships, which is key for grad school. Everyone said that it is so easy to get a job in a lab, even as a lower division. I don't know how Berkeley is with all that, but I don't think it is as easy to get into the labs there.
And UCSD is ranked SO high for bioengineering. Something like top 10 in the nation.

The professor I talked to at UCSD said that for science professors, teaching is only 1/3 of their job, that research and research funding make up the other part.

I had the same decison between berkeley and SD i chose SD!!! haha Berkeley is a fabulous school but it wasn't the best choice for me because UCSD is better in bio and such and I'll definitely be closer to my family! haha I just hope it's fun too!

Right now I am torn between UCI and UCSD. Just wondering how business econmics for undergrads compare between the two? If anyone has any information or can point me towards some information, it would be greatly appreciated. I am planning on going back for my MBA after a couple years of experience in the real world.

errr. Your STILL torn between UCI and UCSD? How does that work???

transfer. have until June 1st to decide. I might be heading down to SD next weekend for Sun God and will check out the school.

Hey ppl.......
Well.....I've not done my high-school in the U.S. and I just wanted to know what is this " Regent's " and "Regent's scholar" thingie ??
