UCSD biochemistry/cell biology program

I got into UCSD biochemistry/cell biology major with regents scholarship. :D

What is this major like? It's impacted, so does that mean it is very competitive?
Do a lot of students under this major do research, etc? Are classes mostly premeds? Is it highly probable for me to get Bs in every class, even when i try very hard?

I'm very concerned about it being a competitive major... :'( I heard that UCSD has a lot of premeds wanting to get into medical school, so they need high GPAs, and the grades are on a bell curve. I dont want to be a doctor; I just want to do something biology related in the future, like research or something like that. Compared to premeds though, will I be in the bottom quarter of the class?

Of course, I wouldn't decline UCSD JUST because of GPA or anything. i've visited the campus and I love the school. However, I'm having a hard time deciding between UCSD and UCI. I love biology and everything, but I will also be working part-time and I want to enjoy college life, and I'm not sure if that is possible if I am going to be in cutthroat classes with premeds all trying to get 4.0s. Will I be killing myself just to maintain a 3.0?
Grades arent everything, but I'm being realistic. If I am put into a major that is out of my league, I will def. not be happy in the school. :) So please don't judge me harshly.

Also, how many students get regents scholarship? I'm curious where I stand next to the other students in my major... XP

Do a lot of students get the opportunity to do research? I'm really excited about research, and I hear that UCSD has great opportunities. I wonder if it will be difficult to get one though...
Also, I hear the internships opportunities at UCSD are really great. :) can someone elaborate?

Thank you in advance for any input!

Regents Scholarship is very rare. Probably 0.5 % of top HS students. You should be fine. 3.5 may be hard but 3.0 is the average effort. Besides, UCI is not easy either.

Oh dear…
To keep my regents scholar status, I need a 3.5 GPA throughout all 4 years.

Really? .5% of the class? I was under the impression that at least 30% of applicants get regents scholarship…

You don’t need to worry your Regents, thus yourone of the top applicants. No need to stress. If anything at all others will start getting intimidated by you when they find out your Regents.

Do a lot of people in Biochem/cell have the regents though? since it is impacted… i’ve heard it is very competitive.

Probably not. Many engineering majors get regents.

Regents is a HUGE accomplishment, UCSD must really like you! Congratulations!

To keep your regents, you only need a 3.0. Unless they changed it this year, which I doubt.

I was a Biochem/Cell Bio major, and not regents
Work hard (which I’m sure you do, as you were rewarded regents) and you’ll stay above a 3.5 every quarter.
