UCSD BioEng MEng admission, vs. Duke MS

Hi guys,

I just got admitted to UCSD MEng program in Bioengineering and Duke MS program. I am trying to decide between the two.. I understand that they are both great programs and highly ranked. UCSD has better weather, but Duke has better name overall. (no stipend for either schools)
One concern is that it is crucial for me to finish the program in one year. UCSD says the MEng program is designed to be finished in one year, while Duke doesn't say that. I heard from Duke office that it is possible to finish the program in one year, though it would be quite demanding as I would have to take 5 courses/semester.
So at this point I just wanted to compare the rigorousness of the program. My hope is to do go to school that is more laid back in terms of course work, as I have to work on my law school apps while taking classes. Can any current UCSD bioeng students (undergrad or grad) help me out and advise? Specifically, I would like to know how rigrous the 1-yr bioeng MEng program is (compared to 5 courses/semester), and any other factors that might influence my decision.

Thanks!

Duuuuuuke.

Uhhhh neither school is going to be “laid back” in terms of course work. I watch my engineering major friends kill themselves over school daily and I can only imagine that Duke must be the same or worse. You’re going to be working your a$$ off both places. Good luck in your decision!

915, thanks for the message. Of course, I understand neither would be laid back. But I imagine 5 courses per semester at Duke would be overly demanding, and I was just wondering how UCSD MEng progam is compared to that.

Hey man,

Congrats for getting an offer from UCSD and Duke. I am applying for these universities as well. I wanted to know how you went in the GRE and undergrad average?

I’ve got a GPA of 4/4 and my GRE is in 10 days time.

thanks heaps…

Hey guys,

Completed my GRE on the 1st of Dec…

My scores are V500/Q800…

Do you guys feel that my verbal mark is relatively low and that may deny me admission to these schools?

Engineering programs don’t look at Verbal, so you’re good.
