So, I know that in other threads people have talked about this to a certain degree, but not specifically enough for me, so I'm going to post this again.

I'm going to be attending UC San Diego in the fall, and am wondering if I should bring my car down. I know some people have said that it is, if possible, a good idea to bring a car, but I was wondering, for what exactly do you need a car at UCSD? From what I've seen of the campus, they have just about everything you could need, including general stores, cafeterias, and even a pub. I am just wondering what everyone is saying is so necessary for bringing a car down, because I don't want to bring it down for $600, let alone insurance and gas, and not use it.

I'm from SoCal, by the way, and could take the train ($22) to get home/back to schoo, presumably, and also would not be going anywhere near TJ, due to the recent drug problems down there.

A car is just for convenience. Although UCSD has many things to occupy time, most people prefer to travel outside to have some time and fun. Also it makes the college experience livelier imo. I am also bringing my car down to UCSD too, I live in SoCal also, a 20 minute drive away.

But the idea of not having my car, especially when I need to go home to do laundry XD. It’s just for convenience really.

Sometimes you might the the urge to go out and do something. Plus, your friends will most likely love you more for having a car XD.

I suggest you leave the car at home for the first quarter and see how it goes. Realistically, between what’s on campus, what’s across the street in the shopping center (restaurants, movies, etc.), the beach within walking distance, and the city bus, you really don’t ‘need’ a car. Make sure you figure out how to take the city bus to La Jolla Shores beach and some other places and how to take the UCSD shuttle to the shopping center across the street, Costa Verde shopping and near the mall, etc. This is all free. You’ll know after the first quarter whether you think it’s really worth bringing your car and paying parking fees and having it sit in a lot. There are plenty of students who bring cars only to have them sit in the lot almost all the time.

yup, that’s what i do in new york, and it’s great for getting out the city and visiting the big-box stores (costco, ikea, target) across the river in jersey.

i remember when zipcar was for 21+ members only … guess they thought better after they started leaving their cars on college campuses.

^ what is a zipcar? Is it like a group thing? Do you have to pay to be a part of it? I’m bringing my car up to UCSD for convenience purposes but i would like to know more about this zipcar!

nope, 18-20 year olds are allowed, but they’re limited to the cars that are already parked on campus. which would exclude them from driving the snazzy BMWs and Smart cars that are available in NYC.

zipcar’s a pretty convenient thing, considering that you’ve got access to ALL their cars (assuming you’re a full member) and it’s convenient to book online. last summer, i took the chinatown bus from NYC to boston ($15/4 hours), then rented a zipcar in boston to go berry picking with friends for the day ($55/12 hours).

oh nice, now I just need an excuse to join haha. hm maybe surprise visit my family on mother’s day. /or not because thats over 700 miles round trip
