i'm going on to my second year at UCSD, and there is nothing more I want than to transfer. however, my GPA is an unfortunate 3.2, which makes it pretty impossible to go to another UC

My parents chose this school for me when I was deciding schools, and I really can't picture myself here for the next three years.

i'm so determined to escape UCSD, that I want to transfer to a CC and try to get into another school (preferably a top tier UC) via TAG because my GPA is so sad.

I'm planning to finish fall quarter at SD, then go to a CC and apply for TAG the next quarter.

would this work, or am i just plain stupid?
i got 2 C's
and a few B's at SD and i'm concerned that if i go through with my plan, that i'll have to end up transferring these classes and my GPA will be low anyways when I try to apply with TAG.

any advice would help.

thanks so much!

You need to go to the websites of the different schools you are interested in, click transfer admission, and search for info on TAG. Most of the time it is set up for you to transfer from cc having NEVER taken any classes at any 4 year university. So you may not be able to TAG. But you could still leave UCSD, go to cc your sophomore year and do a regular transfer application next Nov. TAG applications are done during Sept. The deadline at my cc for UC Davis is Sept. 30. If you want to try TAG you would have to wait until fall 2012 for admission in 2013. Every UC s different so your best bet is meeting with a counselor at your cc as soon as you get there.

But the main thing to realize is that TAG for the most part has to be applied for in Sept. for the following fall. You don’t apply for a TAG in the winter or spring as it is only good for fall admission. At least for UC Davis, SD, SC, and Irvine. UALA and Berkeley do not have TAG, they have TAP which I am not familiar with as I am doing a TAG with Davis. Your coursework at UCSD will count and you must be very careful not to go over the amount of units that are allowed. For instance for Davis you cannot have more than 80 transferrable semester units from cc and another university combined.

You may want to consider a UC to UC transfer which may make more sense in your case. Finish this year at UCSD with fabulous grades and transfer somewhere as a junior next fall. For that plan you would apply this Nov. as a transfer student.

You really need to see a counselor at your school as the info here is not always 100% accurate even though we all mean well. Good luck!

BAHH thanks so much. that was really helpful =]

like you said, i’ll begin by talking to a school counselor and start from there.

thanks! =D

1 question. . . im sorry if this is a stupid one but why do i apply in Nov for fall next year?

That’s the way UC applications have always been. You apply Nov. 1 -Nov. 30 for the following fall. Freshman hear back about their applications in March of the following spring and I believe regular transfers (not TAG or TAP people) hear back in April. You submit final grades after May/June. The next couple months are for housing decisions, orientation, etc. then you start in Aug. for semester schools and Sept. for schools on the quarter system.

I am confused as to why you don’t know this. Aren’t you at UCSD right now? You would have applied in Nov. of your senior year in High School. Some schools have spring admits so there might be some variation.

ikr??

i was looking up private school transfer applications too, and most of those were due around march or so. sorry, got a little confused.

thanks, i totally woulda missed the fall application if it weren’t for you. D=

but if i apply to UC’s I’d have to apply with the GPA i have now, huh? so it kinda wouldn’t matter if I did super well afterwards. . .

Your fall grades is also a basis for UC transfer admissions. So even if your current GPA is dismal, you can still try to raise that in the fall.

there is still hope!

haah thanks for all your help!

@ibelieveicanfly, I want to remind you that not all UCs accept TAG from students with non-CCC coursework. Also, your UCSD GPA will most likely be calculated into your TAG GPA, and most UCs have raised their TAG GPA to 3.2 or above. Please verify the TAG requirements before you decide to leave UCSD. The UCs have a TAG Matrix that explains all the nitty-gritty details for each of the 7 campuses at offers TAG at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/files/CC11_TAGMatrix_final.pdf
