UCSD Class of 2017: Muir College

stephieism, thanks so much for your reply. So Muir requires FIVE more classes than Warren or is that units or what when you say GE’s. Sorry I am not up on this but I now know why DS thinks he made a big mistake not picking Warren-yikes.

I think he will come in with 9APs so that must count for something, right? So far, his scores are all 5s. Did you ever find a place to look up your APs and see what they apply to?

Congrats on your admittance and thanks again for your post,

@fidoprincess

“I think he will come in with 9APs so that must count for something, right?”

WOW! 9AP’s? That’s great!
Here is the Muir chart that explains which AP courses can subsitute for GE’s.
If his scores are all 5’s, he shouldn’t worry about anything! :slight_smile: Usually the scores needed to not take a class is 4-5.

http://muir.ucsd.edu/academics/documents/AP-IBchart.pdf

Yes, Muir requires 5 more classes than Warren. I see why he might be upset; at Warren he could have done far less GE’s! However with the help of his AP classes, he doesn’t need to worry about much!

@decadecimal What are some of your other choices? :)

@Mwm013 That is so true :frowning: I would say the only thing lacking at UCSD is the football aspect! I love school spirit and would love to cheer on my school team.

Have you been accepted into UCLA?

Wow…looking at that pdf there’s no difference between getting a 3,4, or 5 in the AP English exams…

stephieism, thanks so much for the link! I’ll sit down and try to match the APs up with the GEs. I found the ASSIST thing to plug in his CC classes, too, so I bet he will get credit for some of these things and not worry over the 5 extra classes.

I find it odd that the GEs are so varied for the different colleges and do feel sorry for those who didn’t get their first choice and ended up in a college that has many more GEs. I like the concept of getting a “well rounded” education though but Revelle with 22=wow!

By the way, the housing link is up finally so go sign up!

@fidoprincess
No problem! :slight_smile:
And yes I feel a bit worried for students in Revelle… But I guess motivated students can do it!

And where is the housing application link? I can’t seem to find it.

@stephieism You can find it now when you log in on the main page, under the Housing tab at the top. There is a new link that wasn’t there before “Housing Application”

I can’t post a picture yet. Hope you can find it

Yes, frzz is right. Once you log in to your application page, the housing link at the top now has a tab that says apply right under the tabs that say on campus and off campus housing. It’s really simple and there isn’t anything to even fill out because it already has your name and address in it. You just click 2 buttons and DONE! Print out the page though-just in case.

Guys i know warren has an honors program, but does muir also have one? At many uc honor programs you can get priority registration so im hoping muir has one

Ooh! That’s one of my concerns! I’m scared I may not be able to graduate in 4 years because the difficulty of getting classes.

I LOVE UCSD but I’m considering UCI because I got into the Honors Program, which gives you priority when registering for classes… And you get smaller classes, giving you a better chance of getting to know your professors… Better recommendation letters!

Re: PSYC Math

If you want a BA Psychology, you take 10 series, which is a cakewalk. If you want a BS Psychology, you’re in 20 series - which is a bit more challenging, but still quite manageable. I think a Math requirement (particularly for a BS) is going to be fairly standard for most schools. At UCSD, it would also satisfy GE requirements, so you’ll save yourself three quarters of courses by taking the full Math 10 or 20 series.

Re: Muir GEs

Likely the easiest GE program of all the colleges for the majority of students. This is even more true for individuals who came in with a lot of AP credits. Even if you have to take the GE classes, they’re all lower division classes that are relatively easy (in contrast with Warren’s upper division Areas of Concentration classes). But yes, the answer to this is certainly: “At least you aren’t in Revelle, ERC, or TMC.”

Re: UCSD v. UCI with Honors

There should be both Muir Honors and Regents Scholars. I believe only Regents have priority registration. I had to make the same UCI (with Regents) v. UCSD (at Muir), and I’m glad I chose UCSD. Talk to people in your major at both schools.

Besides the money and priority pick, honors programs just hold your hand a bit more. The amount of professor interaction you have will really be up to you. I doubt UCI class sizes are any smaller than UCSD. Also, Muir has a Dine-With-A-Professor program, so you can treat a professor out to lunch and learn more about what they do and who they are.

Thanks for the info on Psych Math classes. Is there an advantage in getting a BS vs. BA? My daughter does not want to get a PhD but maybe to go grad school for something like speech therapy.

Thank you @MiqueMaus for your information!

What college of UCSD are you currently in? And what is your major?

BS is tailored more toward individuals looking at graduate school (for Psychology) and is more focused on research. I think you could make Med School work as well if you take the right classes. Also has coursework that would allow someone to sit for the Patent Bar.

In grad school right now as I graduated from Muir as a Poli major last year.

@MiqueMaus cool!

Was it difficult to get the classes that you needed? I’m concerned that maybe I can’t graduate in four years because I can’t get the classes I need?

Physiology and Neuroscience at Muir, anyone??

I got into Muir as a Physiology and Neuroscience major but I also got in for neuro at UCLA. I’m still waiting on Berkeley and a bunch of private schools, but in all likelihood it’ll come down to Cal, UCLA, UCI w/ Honors, and UCSD.

@Maazasher: I got into the physiology and neuroscience course at Muir. I’m an international student.
Just curious, since Muir has the least GE requirements, does that mean students have a little bit more free time?
My parents insist me on going to this college after failing to get into UCLA and UCSB. I’m more of a social and party guy. Heard that UC San Diego isn’t the greatest if you want a great social/party life as well as studying hard. Are there good opportunities for me to work part-time in restaurants so I can earn money? How close is UCSD to the SDSU and USD (both places where the party happens).

I heard that the overflow Muir students room in Revelle?
About 800 students were admitted to Muir this year… How many people can Muir house?

And say if you are placed in Revelle… Then practically you belong to Revelle except that you have only 14 GE’s? Don’t Muir students in Revelle feel out of the loop and estranged from their college?
