For all those who did not get in, please know that there is the perfect college out there for you. My son was accepted to Marshall, which was a huge surprise. He is OOS and had a good GPA (3.8) with a decent ACT score (28). He had a lot of EC’s and community service and was a Varsity Athlete (ice hockey…not useful in CA), but based on the stats and posts of others, we never thought he had a chance. He also was invited to the UCSB Chancellor’s reception this coming weekend…again…a huge surprise. While he got lucky, I am sure he did not get in on his grades alone. He had a very unusual essay, and is a dual citizen, so schools really do look at things besides the numbers, and you should not give up hope. Just because one school doesn’t see you as a match, doesn’t mean all the other schools you applied to feel the same way. I know many people who have gotten rejected by their range schools and were accepted into their reaches. You will end up where you were meant to be!

Weaknesses: Essay could’ve been more creative. My EC/awards could have been a lot better.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My strong GPA and SAT score probably pushed me over the edge. General Comments: We’ll see about UCLA and Berkeley, but I have so many friends accepted that I feel great! Hopefully I will meet some new friends if I come here. Thinking about planning a mini-trip to San Diego soon since I live so close so hopefully I get a better sense of UCSD. Either way, Good Luck!!

Yes, visit San Diego soon! I’m sure you’ll love it down there. I’ve never been to the UCSD campus but I heard that it was nice also.

[ *] Strengths: Many leadership positions, one of the essays, trilingual (Thai + Chinese + English) + a little bit of Korean
[ *] Weaknesses: Low GPA + SAT, weak senior course load
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Being an international applicant probably helps. Also, maybe the part that I speak several languages and am involved in a couple of leadership positions helped push me a little there.

To those who are accepted, congrats! To those who aren’t, I’m sure you will ended up at one of the great universities, don’t lose hope! Good luck everyone!

Objective:[ul]
[]SAT I: 2130 (700CR/760M/670W)
[]SAT II: Math Level 2 (800), Physics (800), Chinese (800)
[]Weighted GPA (out of 4.5): 4.1
[] UC GPA: 3.86 (UW) 4.36-ish (W) (These are a bit blurry as I’ve never gotten the hang of calculating them properly. Our school also has major grade deflation)
[]Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 18/270
[]AP: Psychology (5), Computer Science (4), Chinese (5)
[]IB: IB Diploma: English (HL), Computer Science (HL), Physics (HL), Psychology (SL), Math (SL), Chinese (SL)
[]Senior Year Course Load: Most difficult course load offered by our school. The above classes plus Theory of Knowledge
[li]I also took two 4 unit college courses at UC Berkeley: Cognitive Science 1 (Received an A), Political Science 2 (Received a B)
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[]Applied for Financial Aid?: No
[] Major: Computer Science
[]Extracurriculars: 6 years of competitive air pistol and rapid fire pistol of junior team in Shanghai (2 years as team captain), MUN, Debate (Group leader), School magazine (Science and Technology department leader)
[]Job/Work Experience: Had a job for one summer as assistant manager for a child daycare system
[]Volunteer/Community service: Personnel manager and salesperson of a charity fundraiser where we sold sunglasses to fund surgeries for the senior citizen population. We raised enough money to fund 100 surgeries.
[]Essays: I’d say pretty strong. For the first essay, I wrote about how moving to China changed my world and how seeing the differences in cultures inspired me to learn about the world around me. My second essay was about overcoming gender biases which exist in China, particularly in the pistolling community, and how becoming team captain had given me the confidence to pursue what I love and not let social norms restrict who I am

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Probably my essays and my focus/achievements in pistolling.
[] Weaknesses: My scores and grades. My school has major grade deflation and it looks terrible for the UCs. I think that the lack of variety in ECs is also a bit worrying seeing that others have large lists of what they’ve done when I just focused on pistolling, which was time consuming (15 hours a week, 40 weeks a year)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my essays were rather compelling
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UC Riverside (Accepted with Regents), UC Merced (Accepted with Regents), UC Santa Cruz (Accepted), UC Davis (Accepted), UC Irvine (Accepted), UC San Diego (Accepted), MIT (Rejected), GATech (Rejected probably because my essays for this school was terrible)

[/ul]General Comments: I’m glad I got in, but I’m still waiting on Berkeley! Good luck/congratulations to everyone else!
