[ /list][ b]Other[ /b][ list]
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: Nope

[ /list][ b]Reflection[ /b][ list]
[ *] Strengths: Maybe the number of APs I took? My test scores are decent all around I guess. Maybe the extracurriculars too, like the intern experience and science-related leadership positions
[ *] Weaknesses: LOL. GPA with 2 C’s? but I took a ton of hard classes so…
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Maybe they liked my essays because I was really honest and blunt. I think they also liked my test scores.
[ /list][ b]General Comments:[ /b] Good Luck!! Don’t ever give up! This first semester I basically hated myself because I thought I wasn’t going to get anywhere. :)

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] ACT: 1st Sitting: Math (33), Science (28), English (30), Reading (34), Essay (10)
2nd Sitting: Math (30), Science (35), English (35), Reading (34), Essay (12)
The first sitting my proctor gave less than standard time on the Science section, and was on the phone throughout the test, so I asked all my colleges to discard the Science section, since the score was an anomaly.
[] SAT II: Physics (620), Math II (650) [These are impressively low.]
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.5 (I go to a competitive school OOS; the grading system is different than CA)
[] UC GPA: unsure
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP American History (5), AP Physics B (3)
[li] Senior Year Course Load:[/li]AP Physics C: Mechanics, Electricity, & Magnetism
AP Calculus AB
AP Latin
AP Stat
Chinese 2
History Research/Foreign Affairs
Ethics/Writing

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
This seems like a lot of work - president of two clubs, three varsity sport athlete, captain two of them, swim on two club teams outside of school, girl scout, working on gold award, run workshops exposing girls to STEM fields, teach kids about disabilities, peer tutor, work with Habitat for Humanity, and some other stuff I can’t think of right now.
[] Job/Work Experience:
Lifeguard
[] Volunteer/Community service:
I’ll just list a couple: I’m a girl scout, the clubs I run are for charity, my gold award is making food banks more self reliant by helping them grow their own food, I work with Habitat.
[] Personal Statement: Probably pretty good?

[/ul]Other:[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: No
[] Intended Major: Mechanical Engineering (Rejected), but accepted to Math
[] State (if domestic applicant): NY
[] School Type: Very competitive public
[] Ethnicity: Half Asian/Half White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Solidly upper middle class - didn’t submit FAFSA though, so probably didn’t affect admissions
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.):

[/ul]Reflection[list]
[] Strengths: My ACT scores were probably a strength.
[] Weaknesses: I’m out of state, and UCSD isn’t as familiar with my school I guess. My GPA probably doesn’t look that competitive without a real context of my school. Those SAT II scores were brutal though.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I guess UCSD is more competitive than I thought; I was kind of surprised when I got the borderline applicant questionnaire.
[] Other Schools: Accepted to Binghamton University, Stony Brook (WISE Program), Case Western, Drexel (5 yr BS/MS w/ 18 mo of internships), Michigan, RPI, Colorado School of Mines, Rejected from Northwestern ED though.

General Comments:
Kind of disappointed that I was rejected from MechE, but I have plenty of other good options. UCSD was going to cost me a lot more, than all the others, since everyone else gave me merit scholarships, so this just makes it easier to eliminate.

[/li][/ul]General Comments: Wasn’t sure if I was going to get in but would not have gone anyways. Will probably end up at Chapman, so I’m happy they gave my spot to someone who may end up there. Good luck!

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I: N/A
[] ACT: 34
[] SAT II: Chemistry (710); US History (650)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.78

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar, National Championships for 18s & under Team Tennis
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): -4 years HS varsity tennis team, All-League 3 years, MVP varsity award (Captain 1 year)
-Summer Jr. Tennis Team: won sectionals and went to the national championships one year

-participated in the Vow of Silence for 3 years to stand up against child labor and stand up for children’s rights to education and clean water + raised money for the organization
[] Personal Statement: Personal Statement: 7/10 (good topics + somewhat poor writer = decent statement)
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Nope
[] Intended Major: Cognitive Science; Alt: Pharmacological Chemistry
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant): N/A
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: half Filipino, half White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket:~ 90k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): N/A
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:
- ACT score
- Leadership position as Captain of the HS tennis team
- Not much else really to be honest
[] Weaknesses:
- UW GPA
- W GPA
- Lack of more APs
- no impressives ECs or Volunteer Work
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Personally, I think UCSD weighs GPA over test scores but I’m probably biased on that. If I had to guess, I’d say I was wait-listed due to my relative lack of APs, relatively low UW & W GPA, maybe lack of more impressive ECs since I had a superficial participation in 4 of them, and was only really involved in like 2 of them + no extensive volunteering. I think I had similar stats to others who got in so it could have gone either way (as always).[/li][/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to everyone who got admitted! You worked really hard for it, you should be proud of yourselves! If you didn’t get in, I’m sure you’ll end up a place where you’ll be happy.Where ever you get in, you deserve it, where ever you don’t get in, chances are you worked super hard and deserved to get in there too, but in the end, I’m sure you’ll find your match.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t know a single person who ended up in a college they weren’t happy with, regardless of whether they got rejected from their dream schools or even had to fall and choose one of their safeties. Even if you get rejected from every college and go to a community college, you CAN still be happy. I know people who got rejected to every college, went to community college, and now they’re in places like Stanford and UC Berkeley. Keep your head high and an open mind, and I’m sure you’ll end up happy. Good luck everyone!

[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Writing Club ( no leadership). I was really bad at participating at activities in school because my family didn’t have the time to pick me up from school as my mother was pretty sick due to surgery she had. I often had to stay home to take care of her.
[ *] Job/Work Experience:None
[ *] Volunteer/Community service:500+ hours  .3 years of commited community service as a library assistant, homework center tutor for low-income children, reading buddy tutor for bilingual children,Hospital volunteer, reading game volunteer supervisor assistant
[ *] Personal Statement:AMAZING! I did not let ANYBODY :stuck_out_tongue: and I mean anybody read or edit my personal statement because I felt that my voice would be taken away from my personal statements  because I know I would’ve been put down on the way I told my personal statement in a narrative way and how I was supposedly being “too much” emotional  . My personal statement explored my parents life as immigrants and how they struggled with English and money. I related more to how my father worked hard and lead me to push myself in life and work. I focused on my struggles with learning English, being judged upon my teachers and classmates and how I overcame them. Moreover,I also talked about tutoring a young low-income girl who seemed to reflect my own personality and how I encouraged her to move forward in life and improve in school. ;D

[ /list][ b]Reflection[ /b][ list]
[ *] Strengths:Confident, talked about my drop in grades during junior year and used the entire additional comments section :P, honest and pretty good gpa
[ *] Weaknesses:Horrible SAT and ACT scores and barely any extracurriculars at school
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:Possibly my idea of portraying my life as an open book and honesty attracted them.Or, the admission officer kind of liked my personality :P.
[ /list][ b]General Comments:[ /b] BELIEVE in yourself! From the past three years,I’ve been coming on this website and feeling horrible about myself and self esteem when I saw such brilliant and great individuals with 2300+ SAT scores and 5.0 G.P.A. I honestly lost myself during junior year when my friends were doing amazing in high school and I wasn’t doing that great with 3 B’s first semester and 2 B’s second semester of junior year. However, UCSD and UCD overlooked that and accepted me. I’m honestly shocked, but thankful that such great universities are giving a chance to low-income students and allowing us to move forward in life :D. I’m thankful for these colleges of overlooking my grades and accepting me for who I am. Really, don’t lose confidence and apply! <3 Good luck, all my juniors, sophomores and freshman! ;)
