UCSD Class of 2020 Discussion

So like…6:43 pm here in cali, calls are probably done, right?

Yep. I think the first batch of calls are over. Congrats to those who got in!

@Andrew545 Just so you can get a possible admission decision 6 days in advance? Come on lol.
On another note, the percentage of African American students at UCSD is 2.2%… Wow. Much lower than UCLA’s 4%. Come on UC system.

FeelsBadMan got to wait 5 more days :’(

^had to put that on my snapchat story @10s4life

@Andrew545 lowkey. lowkey.

Being black has nothing to do with getting admitted. There is no affirmative action in the UCs.

race is a factor though…and being high stats as URM > High stats for asian/whites for admission

Wait, when are decisions released for UCSD?
What date and what time?

Thankss

@thejappster Officially at least, affirmative action is illegal for all state schools in California. However, it’s possible that bias slips into the admissions decisions…Not to any real extent, however. It’'s why UCI (I think) is over 60% Asian.

Now, race does figure into scholarships.

Its funny how the UC system ALL pride themselves into this thing called “diversity” when the number of Caucasian and Asian students outnumber that of minorities as high as 6-1. An URM student population of 15% and below is anything but diverse.

Race does not factor into admissions. However, I believe that they can look at your zip code and factor that into their decisions.

Everyone who is admitted to UCs are very much so qualified. Let’s leave it at that.

Wait so if you’re zip code says you live in Potomac, Washington DC/Maryland for example (I don’t live there but know a few people that do), they can use that in an admission decision? Would that would work to a student’s advantage because it’s a wealthy area and UCs want out of state money?

I believe quite the opposite Eric based on the calculation I’ve seen… You get points for being in a neighborhood that is considered socioeconomically challenged. You also get points for having parents that didn’t attend college and points for parents below the poverty line. .Points for attending a school in a worse neighborhood etc. Out of state may be different though.

From what I understand affirmative action, which is fixed quotas based on a given factor(such as race) is illegal, but holistic admissions, which looks at an applicant from every perspective (including race) is legal and is used by the UC system.

I agree with @IBGuy101 (btw I realy hope you get in!!) if UCs used AA maybe the schools wouldn’t all be like 80% white and Asian. The number of admitted black and native students is abysmal, and if you wish you were another race just for some mythical admissions preference you need to take a step back and analyze how petty you are lmao

@flaminhaute well said. It’s simple to just look at the actual number of minority students and see that there is no such thing as affirmative action in the UC system. Unfortunately, the lack of minority students creates an issue where plenty of smart minority kids who get in think twice about attending because it doesn’t always seem like a welcoming place. That is why schools like UCSD are reaching out to URM students who are accepted as they want these kids to attend and it’s the only way they have to increase diversity. They also have to work hard to keep these kids in the school once enrolled for the same reasons. And every time someone says something like “I wish I was black” it negates these students’ achievements. So please educate yourselves and think twice about saying something like that.

@Momof7thgrader I couldn’t have said it better myself! Yeah I agree. When you pin someone’s acceptance on their race you’re ignoring all that they’ve accomplished. We always blame the URM student when we’re not accepted, but we don’t talk about the kid with sad stats but a legacy, etc. Can we really say amazing kids like Kwasi Enin were only accepted into prestigious schools because of his race, conveniently ignoring his sky high stats and ECs?

@flaminhaute Thanks for the kind words!! Sry SLO didn’t work out. Which UC’s are you waiting for?
