UCSD Class of 2021 Discussion/Decisions

Are financial aid/awards updated on the portals for accepted applicants? My D’s is not updated and we sent the FAFSA in Nov. I’m trying to figure out if it’s a delay, or if they didn’t get it for some reason.

@Teumessian Wow, I can’t believe that went right over my head! Thank you!
I got accepted for Roosevelt(2nd) Undeclared

Thank you for the insight @Gumbymom I will certainly take that into account now!

@lanabanana99 Click “Next” under your congratulatory acceptance letter, then “My Financial Aid Estimate” under the steps to commit. A message for Regents should show up if you’ve got the scholarship.

@PAwind98 No problem! It happens to me a lot too haha. Congrats on the admission!!!

@Teumessian Oh… I see. Thank you!

when will the admission packages be sent in the mail?

Wait, so what I’m understanding is that for CSE applicants, if they exceed a 3.3 GPA based on their screening, then they are placed in a lottery and selected at random until all the spots fill up?

@BunnyBlue , @lkg4answers , and all the other undeclared or waitlisted CS applicants… sorry for the disappointment. As the parent of an accepted CogSci applicant, this situation upsets me as well. My D actually wants an interdisciplinary program with a CS component, and the way the CogSci department brings together psych/linguistics, design, and CS looks perfect for her, on paper. But when I look at the stats and see the department doubling in size each year because it’s overrun with CS aspirants settling for a CS-adjacent major, it gives me serious reservations about encouraging her to consider UCSD. I don’t see how genuine enthusiasm for CogSci can fail to be diluted when it gets to a point where the majority of the students in the major are only “settling.” All the best to you guys and your kids in choosing a program that’s a good fit!

Accepted: Computer Engineering
Sixth
UC GPA: dont really remember, 4.1 something
UW GPA: 3.78 UW
ACT 31
Really strong essays (I think my essays made a big impact on their decision since my stats weren’t super competitive)
Decents ecs. I had a lot but nothing too special other than having officer positions

Question for other people that were admitted: On the overnight program application, the IDEA Engineering Student Center Overnight Program isn’t an option for me to select. Does anyone know why or have the same problem? It only allows me to select BSU and SIAPS.

Anyone know an estimate for what the admission rate was this year?

Accepted to first choice major: Computer Science
Warren
UW GPA: 3.97
ACT 33 (35E, 35M, 35R, 28S)
Decent ECs, a lot of volunteering and some clubs
NorCal

I am puzzled by the new 3.3 CSE thing too. Got to think UCSD is trying to discourage UD folks coming over just trying to get into CS (must’ve been too many). The other reason may be due to some weird form of diversification. At least you can now decide not to come to the trap. People who came in last year may be hosed if they don’t get in this year. Lower GPA kids now have some hope. They are the only happy campers in school, which in itself is kind of mess-up. I predict less UD kids will come this year, which again may be the intent anyway.

@bunnyblue, Thanks for your sympathy!

I thought UCSD was a great fit for me, I’m sad they didn’t see it that way.I did get into UCD’s CS program yesterday. I also got into UIUC CS-- which is a much higher ranked program, 4th ranked by the US News & World Report. (UCSD is 15th).I was told that for the current admissions cycle UIUC received over 4300 applications and chose 215 students. The average ACT score was 34.5.

But, I love my home state and wanted to stay instate!

When I toured UCSD, they said they were trying to address the gender imbalance in CS…currently they have 17% females…I wonder whether it was just lip service!

Waiting for UCB.

@pristinechris UIUC CS program is significantly better than UCSD CS. Congrats on admissions to UIUC CS, that is a great achievement!

Got waitlisted from Computer Engineering
GPA: 3.85
ACT: 35
SAT II (Math 2): 800

Accepted to Economics
Warren
GPA: 3.88 UW, 4.3ish W
ACT: 33
Out of state

UCSD CS is actually pretty close to any 1st tier CS schools, if you really look into their program/faculty and all that. But for CA residents applying to CS it’s very easy to fall thru the UCB/LA/SD crack nowadays. UIUC has been welcoming such CA folks for a while. Its CS is renowned but if you don’t want to pay for OOS tuition, UCD CS is a fine option too. UCB L&S might be also for you but just can’t get in directly.

I really didn’t expect to get in because my test scores are so low, but I think I made up for it in ECs and volunteer work. Good luck to all!

@patertrium your DS isn’t actually going to choose ucsd, right, with those stats? Perhaps UCB or Stanford for yours? (My DS is also admitted to Warren – and might actually go there, and also for Bio.; SoCal family here)
