@oscarmom1 while Computer Science in the CSE department (school of engineering) is considered the “main” CS major at UCSD, there are alternatives that may interest your son. The Department of Mathematics (division of physical sciences) offers a Math-CS major which is also impacted and difficult to get into. There is a new data science major coming out soon, through a future Data Science department. Many students also major in Cognitive Science, particularly with specializations in Human-Computer Interaction or Computation. Your son does have options at UCSD
Accepted into ER for Physiology and Neuroscience
uw UC GPA: 3.90, W Capped UC GPA: 4.25
New Sat: 1340 (650 math, 690 r/w)
meh ec’s basically was treasurer for two clubs and did the usual volunteer work
Essays I tried to keep unique
@DoctorP my son applied computer science but was accepted to Probability & Statistics under maths Dept. Is that relevant to the new Data Science Department or similar stuff that you were talking about? Where can we know more about the relationship between Prob&Stat of maths Dept and the Data Science Dept.? Thanks!
@fung the data science major has not been finalized yet, so most information exists through word of mouth. It was approved by the academic senate last year and will probably be available by 2018/19 in a separate, capped department. Probability & Statistics was likely your son’s alternate major choice. Because he is in the math department, he can switch into Mathematics-Computer Science freely without having to pass the screening process (if he so chooses). You can find more information here

@DoctorP Do you know if DS will be a major under CSE or a department on its own and if the latter under Jacob or under Science? I had heard that when DS comes out will be under CSE so still badly capped anyway. BTW, math-cs has a lot more math requirement than CSE and for many, math is actually harder stuff than CS. Plus math-cs does not have any priority on CS courses and can’t take many upper CSE courses. Cog Sci has a lot of Cog-centric non CS requirement too. Bottom line, if you only want to major in CS, and I think there are plenty (perhaps too many) like that, but did not get it in UCSD, go where you got into CS direct even when that school might not be as good as UCSD. If you still come to UCSD be flexible as most likely you won’t get into CS, even if you get 4.0 on screening classes now.
@DoctorP @Just4Years Many thanks! Yes he chose as the alternate major.
Is there a groupme/ Facebook group?
^
Does anyone know if there is a Facebook group for parents of admitted Tritons?
So happy to consider this a school for me got accepted under computer engineering
@cher8495 If you search UCSD Parents on FB you will find a a helpful group.
accepted for Aerospace Engineering (?) at Marshall (?)
I only chose my college because it had Oceanview Terrace or whatever it’s called which seemed pretty cool.
UCSD is kind of like a last resort for me being OOS and all, but I may need it based on the way things went last Friday lol
Is anyone going to the siaps overnight program?
Has anyone received their acceptance packet yet?
Some have, yes. However, I live outside of the States, so I suspect mine will arrive in a few weeks.
My major is undeclared-physical science. Is it easier for me to get into Math-CS?
Transfer student here…Have they already released all of your decisions or is it on a rolling basis now? Thanks
@enpz45 all acceptances have been released via UCSD portal.
Math-CS is an impacted major. Actually the whole math depth is impacted. Look up Impacted majors and the process to get in.
Small sample size, but can confirm my son has received his package in the mail today. Thin oversized envelope with a letter, certificate of acceptance and some info on Triton day with a wristband attached.
