UCSD Class of 2021 Discussion/Decisions

@kabobgirl You have a really good question above (#1897) – if these two student groups for chemistry are separated, then that makes UCSD quite different from UCLA (in this regard). At UCLA I’ve heard everyone takes the same chem. and Biology regardless whether or not they took AP chem (and Biol.) and got 4s-5s on AP tests. But I’ve no idea if UCSD separates these two student groups/classes. This is important to know about, considering the curved grading. Pls. let me know if you find out, such as by asking at Triton Day.

@kabobgirl as a premed, if you get a 3 or 4 you will still be able to take the CHEM 6A-C sequence. In the past, if you get a 5, you were allowed to take CHEM 6A-C instead of CHEM 6AH-CH, you just wouldn’t get duplicate college credits for it. I don’t think this is the case anymore, and I’d ask at Triton Day if you’re allowed to take CHEM 6A-C.

I subjected myself to the honors series, and it wasn’t as bad as I expected, but orders of magnitude harder than the regular series. I took my friend’s take-home midterm once for 6B and aced it, but got a B in CHEM 6BH (the hardest IMO). The curve which you can check out at as.ucsd.edu/gradeDistribution is usually pretty generous, and in 6AH we had a final project which was basically a free grade booster. If you make friends in that class you’ll also get to know a bunch of smart people who you can work alongside in the future. I wouldn’t make honors chem the deciding factor in choosing your college, I’d just advise you to be aware that you’re going to have to work a little harder (premeds anyway do)

@howToDecide2017 @DoctorP thank you for your responses. So if it is like in the past and I get a 5 in the AP Chem test, taking CHEM 6A-C wouldn’t be a part of my GPA? And then I’d have to take CHEM 6AH-CH so that medical schools know I took chem courses in college? I am planning on calling UCSD’s Biology Advising tomorrow to see if it’s the same as before.

Under the old system, you could show med schools CHEM 6A-C if you got a 5, but it wouldn’t affect your GPA as the sequence would be considered duplicate credit. For it to affect your GPA, you would have had to take the honors sequence.

Has anyone (especially international) received their acceptance package from UCSD?

@voltthorn
International here - and nope not yet

@voltthorn Yeah, I haven’t received it either. Tbh I don’t think we’re going to receive it for another week or two cause I don’t think they paid for express shipping or anything.

@lostinlife2021 Makes sense. I got an email from UCLA today that says the admission package is on the way, and I think it’ll reach by the end of this week. I think UCSD will reach sometime next week.

Is it worth it to get a single, as opposed to a double or triple? (I’m in Marshall)

Just an FYI, S received his admission packet a couple days ago via snail mail.

Does anyone know what the contents of the admit packet are? And how long it takes to ship internationally?

Also, I will definitely be attending UCSD this year, just enrolled in Sixth College as an International Studies- International Business major. I was wondering is there a group for those who are definitely attending UCSD?

@pineapplemojito2 The admit package includes a booklet detailing campus life, the brochure on Triton day, which is April 8th and a wrist band that admitted students can wear to get free “swag”. I have no idea about international shipping times, but imagine it takes different times to different countries as it was shipped via the USPS to us. We are in the US

@kabogirl- you won’t be able to get a single as UCSD housing is impacted. Most likely you will be placed in a triple that was designed for 2 people. There is regular closet space, a set of bunk beds, a desk and a dresser for 2 people. The 3rd person get a lofted bed with a desk and closet/dresser underneath it. UCSD housing assigns each person to a specific bed so there is no fighting over who gets what. It sounds crowded, but everyone seems to make it work.

I have a few questions.
I was accepted with a communications major. Would I be able to switch into public health? Or is it too late?

@RetainerBaby I believe public health is a capped major so it will be pretty difficult to switch in

Do out of state residents qualify for any scholarships? and if so when will i be notified??

@seniorlyss: UC’s give little merit aid, usually Regents and no need-based financial aid to out of state students. If you received your financial package already and no scholarships are listed, then assume you will not get any. Expect to pay full fees at around $60K+/year to attend.

@seniorlyss:
Types of scholarships
You may qualify for 2 types of scholarships: merit scholarships and restricted scholarships.

How likely do you think the “middle class scholarship” is to come through with something @Gumbymom – Or, does no one know since it depends on the CA budget come November? My UCSD fin. aid said it might offer something but we won’t know until next Nov. (Its need-based, sliding scale-type aid.)

@howToDecide2017: I heard that it will mostly likely be discontinued so I would not count it for this year.
