UCSD Class of 2021 Discussion/Decisions

@Msi18, I think those are all well-reputed schools. I don’t know enough to comment on the relative likelihood of getting into medical schools from those colleges. My medical school did not have many international students, admittedly that was just one school and 20 years ago. Would guess if you do well at any of those schools, U.S. medical schools would give you serious consideration. Maybe base your decision on where you want to live long term. It isn’t trivial to change countries going from medical school to residency, or residency to a job, since every country has their own licensing exams.

@Msi18: As an International student, getting into any US medical school is less than 10% (majority from Canada). If Medical school is your ultimate goal, consider some of the Canadian schools or the European schools. UCSD would probably be a disadvantage due to the sheer number of “Pre-med” students in California competing for very few Medical school spots.

Hi everyone! Congrats to all of the admits! Is there any chat for incoming freshman so we can get to know each other and hoping find our roommate?

US Medical Schools for International Students: US Medical Schools Accepting Internationals has info for international students applying to U.S. medical schools.

aye tritonday meetup anyone?

Hey, does anyone know how the pre-med program at UCSD works? Like…what do you do? Do you have to declare it or something?

Hey guys, in the event that I do attend UCSD, I am undecided, but have figured out what major I would like to pursue. How does one declare a major and is it possible to do so before school starts, if I decide to attend UCSD?

@SierraLobo hey! I currently attend UCSD and am premed. There is no major for premed at ucsd so you don’t have to declare anything. Basically it is on you. The Bio majors are set up so that you end up taking the classes required by med schools. With that said, you can do whatever major you want (philosophy, economics, art history, you name it) BUT in order to apply to med school there are requirements such as Chem, Ochem, physics… So make sure you look up what classes are required for the med schools you are potentially interested so that you complete them. In addition, there are medical clubs you can join that will help you learn more about your medical future and how to create an awesome med school application around campus there also many events and panels hosted by the school that you can go to get additional information as well so keep a look out for fliers around campus and in classrooms.

@solomonf99 hey! I currently attend UCSD. It might be helpful for you to search for this information on UCSD’s website and on tritonlink. I do know that you can’t declare a major before school starts. You will have to wait until the second part of your first year or the beginning of your second. Choosing your major is done online via your personal mytritonlink account that you’ll get soon after you SIR. You are pretty much guaranteed into getting into whichever major you want unless it is capped (such as engineering). Capped majors are difficult to get into but not impossible.

@baileeh1 hi! I was accepted alternative major maths-probability and statistics. Can I still change to my preferred major in CS after getting in? Thanks!

@fung:
Here is the link to change to CS but note that it is now a lottery even if you meet the GPA and course requirements.

Thanks! @gumbymom!

@fung hi! The information in the link from the comment above you will give you all the information on the lottery that you will need. You won’t be able to switch your major right away so until the time you become eligibile to apply to swift he you will need to maintain at least 3.3 gpa. You are then put into a lottery system so that it is by chance you get it. To change your major you will have to at least wait till the end of fall quarter and possibly end of first year/beginning of second depending on cs lottery regulations. Some of my friends have switched into CS so it is not impossible. It is a gamble though. I recommend contacting a counselor as they can give you an idea of your chances of getting in. If you decide to take your chances with the lottery take your ge’s instead of focusing on classes for your current major/possible cs major as there is a limitation on how many credits you can take at ucsd and so you won’t stress over classes you don’t need. To get into cs it is going to take a lot of hard word and luck. For perspective a 3.3 is a B+ at UCSD.

@fung I forgot to mention that while you shouldn’t take classes for you current and prospective majors there are classes you have to take for the cs major application change. Check out that link from the post above me for the current list. This is what I meant by you wouldn’t be able to switch your major right away and possible not even for a year (since it might take you a while to complete those required classes for the current cs lottery requirements)

@baileeh1 Thanks for the detailed explanation!

@baileeh1 Thank you so much!

Hey, did anyone send in their SIR already? Can you tell me how it went? Because I submitted my SIR deposit already electronically, but it won’t let me go to the next steps? :-/

Does anyone know the avg gpa for poli sci majors at ERC?

hi! how easy is it to switch from a molecular biology major to a biochem and cell bio major?

@kabobgirl as easy as going online and clicking a button on your tritonlink account you’ll be given a soon after you SIR
