UCSD Class of 2022

@lovespink Congrats to your son! I was also deciding betweeb different colleges and got regents at UCSB and chp at UCI too. I aimed just for public unis because of my family’s finances and narrowed my choices down to UCI, UCSD, and Cal Poly SLO (didn’t get into B or LA). I visited SD and fell in love with the campus and the surrounding location, and the conputer science program here is amazing with the nicest professors. The scholarship here was the cherry on top so I went.

If your son is interested in computer science and ends up being admitted into the major here, I heavily encourage it. The program is competitive and they are trying to limit as many people as they can from getting in now because too many people want the major, haha. There are many resources here on campus that are really great and a lot of companies come here to recruit. We basically have tech based job fairs every quarter! Proximity to Qualcomm and Northrup Grumman are also useful too :slight_smile:

Good luck wherever your son ends up!

Did I do this okay? It’s been awhile since I laid my stats out like this, lol :’)

Also I don’t know the average stats for regents, sorry.

@ucsdcscholar Yea! Thanks for sharing your info! I don’t have the best stats(UC GPA: 4.3 SAT: 1360/1600, 5 APs, great essays, not many ecs), so I think I’m not going to get regents. It’s fine though, just really want priority registration at UCSD.

Well, if UCSD’s Regent is similar to UCB’s Regent, they are holistic, not purely based on stats. There are top stats kids in the UCB regent, but also people with mediocre stats, presumably with other spikes or URM or first gen or something else. Bottom line, stats doesn’t mean much.

I’ve heard that you don’t get to choose your dorm room or your roommates in your freshman year at ucsd. Both are randomized. Is that true? Anybody knows anything about this?

@intladm You can choose your room type (single double triple) and the people you want as your roommate.

You only can’t pick the specific building/room number you live in as a freshman, but you can pick everything else.

@ucsdcscholar ahh okay, that’s nice to hear. Thanks!

So just to confirm, decisions aren’t coming out March 9th?

Nobody knows for sure I guess

@ucsdcscholar ,

thank you for your insights, very helpful…

if you don’t mind, what do you think was the reason that you didn’t get into LA or B ?
stats you’ve listed looks good enough for at least one if not both, plus your other acceptance(s) backs it up…

my D has gotten CHP from UCI & CI from SB (no Regents on both) last week but it makes me nervous about other schools after seeing your case.

many thanx in advance.

@avz11ymc4 While stats are very prominent in college admissions, I think the process is also hugely luck-based. Of course many of my high school teachers and other older figures in my life were also perplexed about my case like you, but honestly there is never a guarantee. The person reviewing your applications might have a bad day or are more picky than other admissions officers. Maybe the essay wasn’t strong enough. Maybe ECs weren’t elaborated on very well.

There was an image of a graph floating awhile back of a certain high school’s admit rates to a top LAC, and there were many denials listed for those with top SAT scores and perfect GPAs, while the singular acceptance was probably like a 3.6ish and an average SAT. There’s a lot of hidden factors involved and it’s hard to see.

I don’t particularly mind though, I enjoy my time at UCSD and it’s been a great experience for me. I also kept my standards low during the admissions process. Even if your daughter doesn’t get into her dream schools, she’s still obviously been admitted to great places and positively, she has options :slight_smile: In addition, don’t compare her stats with mine; she still of course has a chance to get into these schools. Just make sure she falls in love with the schools AFTER she’s admitted – the best way to avoid disappointment!

@ucsdcscholar ,

thank you for your honest assessment.

you sound like a bright young mind & i wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
i’m sure you’ll do very well !

Is it just me, or did that portal change formats again. :-/ (Esp. the applicant information part)

the*

@musicmeister22 ya it looks different

Hi everyone, Did anyone get a task email yesterday.? When you clicked through it was an applicant survey and California residency survey for tuition purposes questionnaire.

@2022Fall those tasks were sent to applicants in the portal back in Dec or January. Probably there was a glitch and you didn’t get it before and they are resending or it went to Spam and they are resending. Just complete it and you should be fine.

Thank you and best of luck to all!

I have a physical disability and I mentioned it on my UC application. Would I possibly fall under the underrepresented minorities calling campaign? Or does the calling campaign focus on racial minorities?

Not sure about the calling campaign target as it is not published on what their early calling campaign and it is a very small percentage of the accepted applicants. It happens less than a week before everyone hears so don’t worry about it :slight_smile: i know this waiting game is very hard on everyone - hang in there and wishing you some great news at your schools!
