I was just thinking about UCSD and the colleges and would like to know:

-Does UCSD almost always put you in the top or top three colleges you list on the app?
-Is it possible to get your last choice?
-Would they put transfers in Revelle or ERC even if they ranked the two pretty low (Revelle and ERC don't accept IGETC!)?
-Do they look at majors when they put you in the colleges?

I'm pretty scared they'll put me into Revelle (my last choice)...

Last year I applied as a Comm major with a 3.4 and I got into my first choice (Marshall). Last year it seemed like most got into their first or second choice.

I’m hoping I get either sixth, muir, marshall or warren because those are the ones that take igetc. It doesn’t really matter to me which of these i’ll get, as long as I don’t get ERC or revelle. If I get either of those, I’ll definitely not go to UCSD.

For future students I recommend, MUIR, Warren, Marshall, Sixth, ERC, Revelle. Muir has the least amount of requirements to take care of, therefore you pay less tuition and get out faster.

^hm somebody told me that muir has a minimum unit requirment of like 70ish. marshall has like 60 lol…which is why i was planning on putting it first…and yeah datransfer, warren isnt terrible. i think they want just 2 more writing classes?
and monkey, yeah revelle is a beezy, esp for transfers who are majoring in the non-sciences/maths

First off, you do not always get your 1st or 2nd choices. I got my 5th choice last year and I transferred in with a 4.0 GPA.

Second, Revelle is the only college that you may transfer into and not need to complete any more GE’s. If you’ve completed IGETC and are a science or engineering major, you may only need to take some language classes–and if you speak a second language you can test out of those. If you are an engineering major, I would definitely consider putting Revelle as your first choice. For me, I’m taking my foreign language requirement at a CC p/np and it is cake.

Lastly, Warren is actually one of the worse to transfer into with IGETC. You’ll be required to complete 3 upper-division classes in subjects that differ greatly from your major. Those classes also consist of heavy writing requirements; generally a 10 or 15 page paper each quarter. My friends who transferred into Warren would much rather be in Sixth, Muir, or Marshall.

ERC is the worse. I heard MMW classes are absolutely horrible.

In retrospect, my rankings would looks like this for someone transferring in with IGETC:

For Science and Engineering majors:
Marshall>Muir=Sixth>Revelle>Warren>ERC

For all other majors:
Marshall>Muir=Sixth>Warren>ERC>Revelle

That is talking about the Warren Writing program. What I’m saying is that most upper-division classes have some sort of writing requirement set by the department. It all depends on which classes you take however. For example, one of my friends who is an engineering major and in Warren College is taking Sociology classes. He told me he spends almost as much time on his GE classes doing research papers than he does studying for some of his upper-div engineering courses. I don’t know about you, but when I transferred I definitely did it hoping that I could focus mostly on my major.

Regardless of writing or not, Warren requires three GE courses, whereas Marshall, Muir and Sixth only require two. Marshall is the best because you have the most flexibility in choosing those classes. Their only requirement is that one of the classes be writing intensive. Which just means that the class will consist of a paper of ten pages or more.

sigh i lost my pamphlet thing that ucsd handed out with all the requirements, but the marshall thing sounds accurate. and if what youre saying about warren is true, then its damn lucky that im a history major…we usually write a good amount anyway. thanks for the info!

you. are. correct.
i wasnt upset about the writing thing, but i do feel like kicking something now that i have to take 3 classes unrelated to my major. what. is. the. point.

For UCSD I was planning on majoring in Communication and minoring in Linguistics, so I don’t have that much of a problem with “out of major, writing intensive courses”
I don’t like sixth college’s practicum, though. I’m really hoping for Marshall or Muir.
