UCSD computer science What to choose?

Computer Engineering
Computer Science
Computer Science with Specialization in Bioinformatics
Computer Science and Engineering
Mathematics-Computer Science

There are so many to choose from. What is the best or most prestigious program there?

Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is a major in itself?
I thought it was just a department. ([Undergraduate Majors at UCSD](Undergraduate Majors at UC San Diego))

I was using that page you gave me. So CSE is just the department that computer science and computer engineering are in

CSE is the department, there’s no major. You can’t even double major since they’re in the same department, as far as I know.

I’m personally going for a BS Compsci.
I’m not very fond of Biology (or the 200~ units it takes to complete the requirements for it the specialization)

Also, CS is more programming; mostly USING a computer
Whereas CE is more hands-on, circuitry physics hardware etc.

Depends on your preference. I personally don’t like getting down and dirty, haha.

do you know what the Mathamatics-computer science BA major is?
could you double major with that and CS?

The Maths-CS BA major is in the Mathematics department and the BS/BA in CS major is in the CSE department so you should be able to double major.

do you think that is a good combo, or advisable?

I wouldn’t advise it. They are far too similar. Double majors show breadth. Also, CS is a pretty tough path to begin with.

Also, upper divs for both double majors and minors cannot overlap, and I’m not so sure you’d be able to do that.

I would actually recommend Math and CS as a double. Who said double majors show breadth? They can be complementary, which in this case, they are. CS is in essence just an applied math focusing on algorithmic problem solving and abstract maths. If you understand the math theory behind CS, you’ll excel well into your field.

Sorry. He was asking whether to double major in Math-CS and CS, which I found ill-advised (and is actually not allowed now that I looked it up, haha)

Doubling in Math and CS is well and good :]
