So I got into the ERC at UCSD and now I'm confused as to what extra courses I still have to complete.

I will have my IGETC certified by the end of the spring quarter.

Therefore my understanding is that I have to complete any lower division major courses that I did not complete before I transferred as well as 3 MMW courses and 2 Regional Specialization courses.

My question is do I have to take any foreign language courses?
I received a brochure in the mail for transfer students enrolled in ERC. It states:

"For transfer students who have not provided certified completion of a general education program taken elsewhere , listed below are the other ERC GE requirements that may have been completed before transferring."

Fine arts:2 courses
quantitative/formal skills: 2 courses
natural sciences: 2 courses
regional specialization: 2 courses
upper-division writing: at least 1 course
FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: 0-4 COURSES

Since I'm going to have my IGETC certified does that mean I still need to take the language courses?

If any one has an idea I'd really appreciate your input, thanks.

What are you talking about? Don’t you need foreign language to be IGETC certified? And you are IGETC certified? So what’s the issue?

yes you do… you just do not need it if you have at least two years of the same foreign language with a c or higher from highschool

Well I will be IGETC certified at the end of Spring quarter, and I have completed upto Spanish 2 in high school. So where does that put me?

I Emailed office of admissions and they replied by saying:

The general education courses required each UCSD college are for graduation from UC San Diego. The reason it states 0-4 quarters for language is because you may already have some background in a language and may be able to take less than four quarters.

Your high school courses do not satisfy this college level requirement.

Thank you,

Office of Admissions

UCSD

I sent a second email and they replied by saying:

If you have the equivalent of four quarters of language you will be exempt from the requirement, or this requirement can be met by proficiency.

There’s your answer. If you are fluent in a second language, you can take an exam to exempt you from the foreign language requirement.

If you are not, then you are kinda screwed and will have to either 1) take a swing at the language exam; or 2) take the foreign language series at UCSD (you can start it this summer at your CC).

Note that IGETC doesn’t satisfy ERC GE’s, so this isn’t shocking news.
