UCSD Electrical Engineering

So I had a "major" revelation and realized I would rather work as an engineer than a banker. I actually have 5 years experience as an electronic technician, working on helicopters. Unfortunately, I had been following the path of an economics major. Money is not an issue, so I would rather transfer before having all my prep classes, then stay at CC for another year. My question is can I get accepted as an engineering major, even without many of the pre-reqs finished? I know it would almost be impossible at UCB and UCLA, but what about UCSD?

AFAIK, UCSD Computer Science/Computer Engineering are the only majors where you can TAG without completing all the pre-reqs. All of the others require certain classes to be completed prior to transfer.

There might be a possibility to switch from CS to EE once you get in. There are always petitions.

Good for you man, Engineering is the way to go IMO, besides if you want to go into banking later they’ll still look at engineers for pretty much any job.

I will only have about 60% of my major prep done for Computer Engineering and my counselor said I can TAG UCSD for it no problem (also tagged UCSC as well). San Diego is pretty laid back about pre-reqs as long as your major is non-impacted (which I don’t believe EE is) so I’d say you have a good shot. As for like UCSB, UCI, UCD etc. it is possible to get in (UCSB counselor said it was likely I would get in… BUT CE’s are admitted as pre-majors and EE’s aren’t so they might be more forgiving to CE’s)

Heres what it says on the SD website

“If you apply for a major that requires additional lower-division preparation, you must meet the screening criteria prior to being admitted into the major and/or complete those courses at UC San Diego.”

I’m like you and want to get out now instead of stay another year at CC and it appears that UCSD will let you finish any missing lower div classes there. Since you were an Econ major you should be doing math, so if you have time you could still knock out a physics or chemistry class and a programming class + the math you already need to take which would put you in ok shape. So if things work out maybe we’ll both be in the ECE department at UCSD next fall.
