I was admitted to UCSD as a structural engineering major for fall 12. However, I will be missing four prerequisite courses that are essential for graduation.
- General Chemistry
- physics electricity and magnetism
- physics fluid mechanics
- differential equations

Should I hold back UCSD for another year? And take those classes at my jc? Considering that money is not a issue.

Or should I just take those classes at UCSD?

If I do decide to take those classes at UCSD, how long do you expect me to be there until I graduate? I would not want to spend four years at a UC.
I will definitely go to school during the Summer if I need to.

Thank you

Might as well take them at UCSD if money is not an issue. If time is an issue, then why put off another year at a jc?

your essentially missing
2-semester of chemistry
2-semester of physics
1-semester of math

Okay so here is what it comes down your missing about 1 year worth of courses OR 2 quarters at UCSD.

Option 1: Stay at a JC and complete these courses in 1 year (KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE COURSES ARE DIFFICULT) your GPA will MOST likely take drop AND there is a chance UCSD “may” not offer TAG for next year. ON THE UPSIDE you will be saving money and you are able to build your resume up for next year by doing more volunteer/Extra Curicular

Option 2: Go to UCSD essentially your GPA for sure will take a hit UCSD G-Chem and E.M and Waves/Fluids are cut throat classes where you will be compete with incoming freshmens that basically passed their AP Exams where you will for sure take a GPA hit. ON THE UPSIDE at ucsd you can start your BASIC engineering classes like intro to engineering etc.

Out of these 2 options here the essential question what is your GPA now? if it is ABOVE 3.5 and you think you’ll be able to maintain it still i will stay at JC. If your GPA was below 3.5 and you just got lucky and got into UCSD well i’ll take it at UCSD and study my butt off.

your choice.

Thank you for answering
I have around a 3.7 gpa.
I already SIRed to UCSD. I am so anxious that I might be making the wrong decision.

Honestly I hate community college and that’s why I took any opportunity for a way out.
Although the courses may be a bit tougher at UCSD, I feel that I can accomplish more and ear better grades their because I will be living on campus and I will be more dedicated. Not to mention I will also be having loads of fun and such a better time.

Here at community college is the worst time of my life. I dread to go to school but I somehow manage to pull off decent grades in my classes. It’s also very discouraging to have the feeling that I am still at a community college.

I would like to take that next step. I believe that if I stayed at a jc, I will regret not going to UCSD when I was given the chance. Or I might regret not staying at a jc if I had chosen the other route.

It’s a tough decision but I am willing to take my chances and progress. I can only pray that God will provide me the strength to excel in my future endeavors.

As someone following the exact same path (same major n’ all) by next year, I’m definitely rooting for you and hope to see some updates on your progress in the coming months. Have you considered taking one of those classes this summer, to cut down your list of prereqs to complete at UCSD? I will have only one left by the time I leave my CC, which I plan on doing the summer prior to that upcoming fall.

@hotchocolate

Thank you so much. It really makes me feel better cause I’m still uneasy about all of this. Which class are you taking this summer?
I might be able to take a general chemistry class. Community colleges in my area don’t offer any advanced physics or math courses in the summer.

I’m a prospective Fall '13 admit, and if all goes according to plan, I could either crank out 5 classes on my last semester or be more practical by taking 4 and just finishing up Linear Algebra over the summer at CC directly before UCSD.

Any sort of hard science class (or anything 5 units) sounds rough for a summer term though. That’s why I’m thinking twice about doing Calc I with an introductory Psych class simultaneously (for gen ed). But, like you, I also want to ■■■■ of CC. Personally, I feel like it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get accepted, and I want to get out while I still can.

@hotchocolate

Exactly! It is extremely difficult to get accepted nowadays. So I will definitely take this opportunity instead of potentially screwing up my chances in the long run. Thanks for your encouragement, I hope you do well in your studies also. Where do you plan on transferring to next year?

First choice is definitely UCSD (seeing as I already live in San Diego County), also for Structural Engineering. So, hopefully we will run into each other should I get accepted. I might stalk you a bit on here to live vicariously through your posts, lulz.

I plan to apply broadly, and my second choice is Cal Poly SLO. But that school is crazy impacted, and if I did get accepted, I would just do the Oral Communications requirement the summer before I attend. I heard you’re allowed to do that but I’m not entirely sure…

@hotchocolate

Are you able to use that u-link program? Yeah hopefully we’ll have some classes together. We will probably be at the same level by next year anyways. I’m Jonathan btw. And if you have any questions feel free to message me.

Ugh, I wish I did! When I started CC, I was only planning on TAG’ing… so of course, right when news broke of the rule changes, I immediately regretted not doing ULink.

Wow. Out of curiosity, I Google’d UCSD TAG. Take a look at what I found…

@ hotchocolate

So next year is the last year to apply for TAG? Wow, that sucks. You are applying this year though, right?

2014 will be the last time, and yeeuh, I’m applying for Fall '13. I’m actually not surprised, but I didn’t see that coming this soon.
