hey guys
i got into ucsd for fall of 2011 and i'm considering going there, but i was wondering if i could get some student opinions on the school. academics? dorms? food? lifestyle? etc?
thankss!!!

which college exactly?
revelle, sixth, ERC, Muir, Warren, Marshall?

Muir college

How easy is it to get an internship from UCSD (im thinking as soon as second year)?

Getting an internship probably depends on you more than the school. I did internships/research every summer.

Congrats on getting in!
Academics: Definitely not for the faint-hearted, but doable. Some classes are easier than others, as in any college. Just take different classes (all sorts, even ones you may not think you “need”) to see what you like. You’ll do better in classes you enjoy. I’ve found professors to be approachable, though I have heard other things from science majors.
Dorms: Muir ones are alright, I’ve heard. I personally don’t know.
Lifestyle: Very chill, San Diego-ish. Not a party school unless you join a Frat/Sorority. I personally like the quiet…
Food: Some good, a lot bad. Dining halls are kind of gross (after eating there for three years) but they have ready-to-eat things at markets which you can purchase with meal points. There are so many great places off campus if you can drive, though. Especially if you like Asian food.
Internships: There are some out there, but don’t expect them to be handed out. I recommend doing one abroad! Its way more rewarding, and we try to make it streamlined. However, like any competitive, top-tier school, there’s going to be a lot of applicants for a few positions.

Overall, I personally love this place and it’s bittersweet to graduate a year early. I had my choice of choosy schools, and no regrets! Your experience will depend who you meet and interact with. Make friends all over, don’t stay in your room playing stupid video games and take all opportunities, such as speaking engagements, free food, and all that good stuff. Then you will love it too!

thanks for all the info!
I’m just debating whether UCSD is right for me because I’ve heard from A LOT of people that it’s a “boring” school because of the lack of parties and a football team, though that’s not really a problem for me but I hope that there is still some form of a social scene at UCSD. I’ve also heard that the food is extremely expensive.

I know I shouldn’t believe everything I hear but I was just wondering if what I’ve heard is true thus far.
thanks!!

I know how you feel. Some people have been telling me that UCSD is going to be pretty boring too. However, these are all people who haven’t actually LIVED at UCSD. They’re just seniors who are judging a book by its cover. Honestly, after reading a BUNCH of blogs about UCSD, I’ve gained the understanding that UCSD is what you make of it. If you want parties/social stuff… join a club/frat/organization! There are tons of social events associated with those groups. Plus, I know I’ll have a great deal of gratitude for the quiet campus when it comes to finals/midterms week.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is don’t let other seniors’ opinions affect you. YOU can make your college experience whatever way you want it to be! It just may not be served to you in a silver platter (you might actually have to look for a social event every now and then)…it doesn’t seem like a big deal to me.

By the way, I got into Eleanor Roosevelt College. Does anyone know about that? I’m a graduating senior and want to gain as much info as possible :)
